I could make an analogous picture for two stones. Babies are not conscious. They do not think. Stupid picture is stupid.

I do believe in God and yes because of his attributes, everything comes from him.

However, would you blame God for a man who's got lung and throat cancer and is suffering from 65 years of smoking?
Well, no. But then I don't blame the cookie monster when the biscuit tin is empty.

I'm afraid you're missing the point (even though the point is weak, and more importantly false). The picture is transplanting an idea that many do not agree with, into a fictional situation which we can partly relate to, as a means of 'explaining' the idea, so that perhaps the disagreeing-people (atheists mostly) will "see the light". Obviously, the analogy is flawed in many ways, so I do agree: stupid picture is stupid. Just not for the reason you pointed out.

I will happily admit I did not give the actual meaning of the picture much thought. I've never been one for theology and philosophy and the like. I also find that trying to have a debate with a christian is utterly pointless, as they believe what they believe and aren't going to change that because you say they're wrong. I've tried far too many times with some ridiculously christian friends at uni.

So it was more just a stupid comment because I'm bored on a friday night as its exam term so no-one goes out and now everyone has gone to bed.

Gee, you're right! I guess when you take away one of the things which holds some people's sanity together you're left with nothing - but then you're free to do whatever you want ANYTHING at all
If the only thing holding someone's sanity to them is faith in a wholly unknowable, supernatural figure, many would define that person as mentally unstable. So be it if that's what they need to get by in life, but that isn't proof of God's existence. The same effect could be experienced if you believed in anything strongly enough.

I'm sorry but I have no idea what the rest of your comment is saying.

I'm saying that once you reach the point of realising - not just knowing but fully compreheding - that there are no morals, there is no God, that life is pointless and that you are just the same decaying organic matter as everyone else, you have nothing to fear; you have nothing holding you back, nothing to stop you; you can do anything.

And right now, I'm close to that point of realisation, because I've had it with life in general.

A bit nihilistic, no? Life may be, as Macbeth puts it, "A poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more", but you may as well play along with it while it lasts. If you had meaning in your life while you believed in a higher power, what has changed? Surely real, knowable, secular people are much better than a supernatural, unknowable god.

Lol, it doesn't matter either way. We're going to end up the same way eventually, and we will probably only be remembered for about 80 years max - then no one will ever remember you. You are nothing, just another meaningless speck in the vast and cruel cosmos that is life. And when someone understands such a thing, they'll try to live their life how they want - but maybe not in the way everyone else wants, eg:

And you really want to know the secret to happiness? Stop caring - pursuing happiness results in misery.

The secret to happiness is to stop feeling sorry for yourself. It's just that doing that isn't very easy for most people. There is some truth in what you said though, but I'm not entirely hopeless yet. :P

Oh I'm not hopeless. I've just realised my own mortality, understood the lack of anything moral in the world and found the best thing you can do is sit back and not give a ****

Not a great analogy. As we have empirical evidence for a mother, whereas we have none for god.

    Attachment 145837
Doesn't that make it a rather apt analogy we have proof of a mother but the babies do not. it is possible that in another dimension someone/thing has proof of god equally it's possible that they do not

Maybe 'god' shouldn't have created such an imperfect world that it is unable to sustain the space and resource requirements of the human race? Why would an all-loving god allow his 'precious creations' to be murdered and slaughtered and killed through natural causes? How does he pick those 'special few' who die in such unfortunate circumstances?
I actually hate arguments like this one. It is a weak argument. I fully understand that you dont believe in God but here you sound like you are angry at him, like a child angry at mum for not giving her sweets.

So you are a athiest because you dont think a god could allow his people to suffer ?

Maybe I have a reason to be angry? I'm an atheist for lots of reasons.

There is no need for the details, you were angry at god for some experience or another and decided, if god had existed he would not have allowed this to happen to me, am I right?

I wouldn't say the best thing to do is to not give a ****, but it certainly doesn't matter if you do. We can experience some fulfilment (though you'll undoubtedly call it a simulation) in certain circumstances when we look for it, but not through caring what other people think. Morality is subjective and scarce, but it takes a very pessimistic push to say that there is nothing moral in the world. Anyway, isn't it a bit late to be talking about whether there is meaning in life?

Well, if we make the assumption that god is going to stop war, cancer, diseases etc.

Then surely he'd also be able to just increase the size of the planet?
Or he could just say that at x amount of people we all become infertile until some population space frees up.

I mean... he's god right? He can do that cant he? I mean, apparently he created the universe. Surely temporarily neutering a few billion people is childs play for him?

I love this argument . The god fan club cant win.

I used to, but now I don't. I just can't see much point in life anymore.
