Is A Level Physics unoffically essential for medicine?
I'm currently in year 11, and have chosen Chemistry, Biology and English Lang/Lit, and Health and Social care (Mainly because it's less intense and has aspects of work experience that could look good on an application).
But i have been thinking about taking Physics instead of either H+S or English.
I'm looking at applying to Med School, and am wondering if Physics is essential? Even if it's not offically?
You only NEED Chemistry and EITHER Biology or Physics to get in, but wondering if most applicants have all three sciences i'm not going to stand much of a chance :/
I don't particularly like Physics but am pretty good at it :L -
Re: Is A Level Physics unoffically essential for medicine?
Plenty of my friends got into medicine without physics.
It may be good to show that you can cope with a challenging subject but honestly, i really dont think it would matter that much. Having said that im not too sure what health and social care is (as a subject), but since they dont teach it at many schools i dont know whether or not it would be fair to favour a candidate for doing a subject that may not be available to others.
What you should do is ring up the unis you wish to apply for (if you have thought that far ahead) and ask; they will be more than happy to answer you question.... or you could email them.
Anyway best of luck.

It all depends where you want to go. Health and Social care may be seen by some universities as not as demanding as A level Physics. You would therefore be competing against people doing tougher courses than you.
Who would you pick - someone with an A in Physics or someone with a distinction in H+Sc. For many universities , it doesnt matter. For seom it does.
Be careful about asking. They will give you the 'official' answer i it doesnt matter. The reality is that you are more likely to get an offer doing a tougher course .
Besides - in this day and age, I'd like my doctors to know something about how X rays, CT, MRI, PET, ultrasound, radiology work.

Health and Social Care is generally not well respected. I'm sorry to be blunt, but it's true, and I'm trying to help you.
It won't be a detriment to your application, and I can see the work experience benefits, but physics willl look much better, (and if you are good at it, go for it). -

my friend got into Oxford for Medicine with Maths, Geography, Chemistry and Biology so it's not essential but another science would look good

oh wow jesus, how was that even worthy of a neg?Last edited by TitchTheAntiHero; 10-05-2012 at 20:19. -
Re: Is A Level Physics unoffically essential for medicine?
Maths is always good - I'd be a bit dubious about Bio + Chem and English + HSC.ie no Maths or Physics . MY gut reaction based on hundreds of medic applications is that you'd be disadvantaged compared to other candidates.
Medicine is tough enough to get into without starting out a bit behind.
