Durham's international reputation vs domestic reputation
Hello,
looking through league tables I seem to find that in the international rankings Durham does not do as well as it does in UK only league table. Is this simply because it is a relatively small university so therefore their research output is small, so international league tables rank them lower because they take research into account a lot more. For example, the university of Manchester, highly ranked in UK league tables but usually extremely well ranked in international tables, because it is big and therefore has a large research output? -

Re: Durham's international reputation vs domestic reputationLargely. Its research output is still large enough to be considered a Russell Group member, and places in the low 20s in terms of research income, but this is still well behind very large universities like Manchester. Durham is only a mid-size multi-faculty university.(Original post by notarantonio)

But internationally Durham is still recognised and has a great reputation for the areas it has great research strength in, as with all universities -
Re: Durham's international reputation vs domestic reputation
Having worked for a global company in an international capacity I am unsighted of the relative benefits of international reputation v domestic. The reason for this is that graduate schemes are recruited for at the country level. By the time they were offered to me as a candidate for an international assignment I was evaluating them on proven track record of delivery, and maybe a specific skill, either technological, or business or say the ability to speak Bulgarian or Russian, I did not even care if they were a graduate, never mind where they graduated. I would read there last three assignment reviews and that was it.
Given an in country graduate recruitment process as described above then if Uni reputation matters at all, then I believe it would be the domestic one that held sway.
I had to serve my penance by sitting in on the UK graduate scheme assessment days, now and again on a rota basis, in the capacity observing and providing input from an alternative perspective. However these candidates had already been filtered and therefore where they studied or what they studied or even what classification had been achieved was not communicated to me as by then it was not relevant to the evaluation of the candidates. -

I did not understand your post fully...can you explain ? -
Re: Durham's international reputation vs domestic reputationApologies for the late response I have been busy and not on TSR.(Original post by Durham_)

Simple really, as a global company graduate scheme recruitment took place in country, and therefore if reputation mattered at all it was the local one.
Once you have made it through the graduate scheme, the only thing that matters is your track record in the workplace, and the ability to tick the graduate box on the application form when applying for subsequent employment. -

Vaguely related, but of some interest, on tonights episode of Pointless one of the questions was "name a UK university in the times world top 400. As usual sample comprising of 100 members of the public were asked this question.
Durham came third behind Oxford and Cambridge. About a quarter of the sample had named it in response to the question. Higher than I expected, as most people takning the population on average know Oxford and Cambridge and maybe their local one. -
