how do you expose yourself to new music?
I realised im not very "with it" with all the latest songs, i listen to songs that are much older.. mainly because i like it more. Lately I've realised that regardless of what i listen to, i always go back to my 'favourites' and have those artists on repeat! The only way i come across different music is when im driving (radio) or at a friends. Im perfectly happy with the stuff i listen to, but every now and then i come across something which makes me think 'damn i wish i found this sooner, its just so good!' So how can you/do you expose yourself to new music?

Spotify. It's a music streaming service (totally legal) and with a huge music database. You get adverts every so often with the free account, and you can only play 10 hours of music a month. You have to pay to get unlimited music/no ads.
It has a "related artists" thing you can click on and explore similar things. You can also share music with people, subscribe to playlists etc. It's an awesome program.
If you want some artists to get in to, try Red Hot Chili Peppers, Frank Turner, Mumford & Sons, The Smiths, Bill Withers, Seasick Steve, Jack Johnson. -

Either through word-of-mouth, using a streaming service (Spotify, Last.FM, Grooveshark, etc.) to find artists that are 'similar' to my existing favourites, or through music blogs. I manage to get through two albums that are new to me every day through these mediums. For 3 years I was also listening exclusively to older songs, but in finding just one modern artist I liked earlier this year, I now mostly listen to stuff that's 'in' right now.

Re: how do you expose yourself to new music?
last fm's recomended artists' feature got me into some of my all time favourite bands. That and using Metal archives, a metal encyclopedia website with a forum, that is an amazing resource for getting into that kind of music.
Also try rate your music. Look at the charts, pick a genre you like and it will tell you the top rated albums. It's how I got into some of the thrash and death metal I like.
Not sure why this was negged.Last edited by metalthrashin'mad; 09-05-2012 at 14:09. -

Hide behind a bush with naught but a trench coat on. When the new music approaches proceed with the exposure.

Instrumentals that are played frequently during scenes on tv shows are often pretty amazing songs once you listen to them with their lyrics

e.g. Hometown Glory by Adele
One Day Like This by Elbow
The Voice within by Christina Aguilera
etc. etc.
Also there's often the odd blog I stumble across that has an amazing playlist

Put in band/singer you like, then you get their contemporaries, their influences, other bands the members may play in or have played in. -

Re: how do you expose yourself to new music?I look on forums and lurk for a bit, see who's posted and whether their opinions are respected. Then I look for whichever artists they've discussed and go from there. I do a lot of research, look for the most highly regarded albums and artists in said genre and then it has a trickle-down effect and I'll look for artists they've collaborated with.(Original post by tpxvs)

I discovered The Velvet Underground this way, then I looked for Lou Reed solo stuff. Now I'm discovering post-rock, a sub-genre of rock music.
I don't listen to the radio or TV, I feel I already know what's on offer there.
