No he has not. He has been projected as the winner, not the winner!

Can someone point out any implications of this please? Particularly with regard to the EU.
End of the 17-year premiership of the right. Early stats have Hollande at 51.9% of second round votes to Sarkozy's 48.1%. Looks like Hollande managed to pick up most of the disgruntled FN voters, as well as the whole of the left. This is the Fifth Republic's second ever left-wing president, somewhat historic!

What do people think? Successful end to an "anyone but Sarkozy" campaign or a continued belief in Hollande as the right man for the job? Will be interesting to see who he picks as PM (provided, of course, that the likely happens and PS win the general election) and who his PM picks for the cabinet.

Sakozy was basically Merkel's dog in terms of EU negotiations for EU-wide austerity. Now that his dude has been elected, it will make it harder. He has already said that he will not sign the EU debt pact unless there are some guarantees of growth to the French economy.
The markets may start to play around with the Eurozone again because of this.

Its also important to point out that Merkel has lost more power in the regional elections today after her party failed to get a majority in the regional election today...

Hollande is not a fan of austerity and favours long term growth driven reduction of debt. He is in favour of higher taxes for the richest in society, dislikes the power of finance and corporations and, unlike Sarko, doesn't dance with the far-right.

You're clinching at the tiny chance that Sarkozy might pass Hollande while he is already making his leaving speech

Hardcore UMP eh?:colonhash:

He wants to re-negotiate the Fiscal Compat.

Hollande will **** France over, so glad I can relocate to Suisse until he leaves office and we get the UMP back in :h:

Pandering to the extreme far-right and heightening ethnic and religious tensions doesn't get you anywhere and shows what a narcissistic opportunists Sarkozy was. We haven't seen the last of him, I'm sure we'll hear more about his corrupt tenure in the months to come.
