Actually, you're right about the distance, it's really not an issue.

Does anyone know how large the rooms are at Woodland Court compared to the single en suite at Deans Court? Aside from the price difference of 275GBP, I'm not sure why everyone is preferring Woodland over Deans. Is there anything that is significantly better about Woodland that I'm not understanding?
    it's newer

I just received my offer email from Woodland Court. I had to email them to see what was up and the next day I got it. They only give you about a week to pay the deposit too. Not that I didn't know, but just can't let it sit too long! I also saw the thing about booking move-in times. You have to do this e-induction online orientation thing and then you are given the option to choose a time and they only had 01 October onward on the website. I emailed them and said that the website said from 29 September onwards. They said they should have about 100 slots for 29 September and if you do the e-induction right away, you should have no problem booking 29 September.

Whew! Sorry for the book, but I thought would be helpful! I am looking to buy my flights from the States here pretty soon too and want to avoid any nights where I'd need a hotel.

Hope that helps a bit. I'd shoot them an email!

    Cheers,

    Ashley

I thought move-in dates start on October 1 for Woodland?

I chose Deans Court, and I am proud to say I made the right decision. I am living at Deans now.
I will be studying this year, and I thought about Dean Court because it's only for postgrads so it will be quite I guess. do you have ay idea if it's close to the sociology department?

Could you tell us what did you like about the DC?

    Thank you

It would take you about 15 minutes to walk there. Deans Court is quite lovely in my opinion. It's peaceful and the residents are mature (as expected) in a good way. Initially, I liked it because it's only for postgrads.

Have you considered anywhere else apart from DC?

I agree with you, it's nice to live in a peaceful hostel, I used to live in a hostel too when was doing my undergrad and it was really wild (although I luved this back then) but when you need to study or sleep , you can't .. so I guess I want to live with mature students. I'm thinking of Dean Court then maybe Chanty Court. I have only three options (Deans , Chanty, Blenheim) mainly because of the tenacy length. and Blenheim mostly for undergrad so No.

Do you have any idea if they are offering accommodation or not yet, I didn't accept my offer yet for the program, I need to wait for 2 weeks more

If your decision is between Chantry and Deans, it's definitely Deans. I did an extensive research on both accommodations, and Chantry's reviews were awful. Initially, I really liked Chantry but after hearing so many horror stories, I changed my mind.

I don't know if Deans has offered anyone a room yet, but I know that other places has.

    Its important to apply early....

I searched here for views about Chanty,, and students are hating it. I think I will look for another accommodation as a second choice.

Deans Court is definitely nice. As somebody already mentioned, the people are mature and it's very quiet. Don't expect too much of the food though And it can be a bit like High School at times, when everybody knows about your personal business because it's quite a small hall community.

I hope I can get a place although it's far from my college ,, do you have any idea which place is the second best for postgraduate? because most of the houses are mainly for undergraduate. I want to go to woodland but it's very close to my college (4 min) and I need to walk more or I will not do it by myself . beside the arrival date is week after my arrival to Bristol and I don't want to stay alone at the hotel

That is what the website says, I know, but I had seen it as 29 September earlier in the year before the applications were even available. I asked them if there was availability for 29 September and they said they were still going to have time slots available then.

Is that where you are living?

I applied on Tuesday, so I guess I should still wait around for a bit before checking with the accommodations officer.

In regard to booking tickets, if you need a Visa, on the Visa website it says it's best to wait till you have the visa before you purchase your tickets. I'm not sure if that's what I'm going to do...

I also looked at the move-in dates. If this year's week 0 (orientation week) is more or less like less year, even if you move in on October 2-3 it really won't make a lot of difference.

The thing with tickets though is there aren't too many direct flights, so I guess booking earlier would be better. Some non-direct flights can be up to 16hours!

I did a bit more research on the "week zero" thing and that seems about right. Probably not too much going on. It will just be a lot of me wandering around (which is a good thing).

I don't think the visas for US citizens take too long (not sure if you're from the US or not). On the UKBA website they said 100% of decisions were made in 40 days or less. I personally couldn't pass up my ticket though. I work at a travel agency, so I only paid $161 for a one way form Phoenix to Heathrow. I just couldn't NOT buy that! I have no worries about it though. When I applied for my work visa in France (where they lose passports and applications all the time), it only took them about a week. I think the best is to just have three copies of every document and be overly prepared.

Where are you from? I think I read you are studying for Law? Congrats!

Oh no! You applied quite early didn't you, somewhere around early May?

    I really hope I'm lucky...

    Hi there,
Yea, probably not going to be that bad in terms of the wait for the visa. I'm from Canada, not the states it might even be better since we were once a British colony...haha

$161 one way from phoenix to LHR is such a great offer! Is it because or employee discount? Which airline is it? Also, it's probably not direct right?

Thanks for the congrats! What program are you studying?

Everyone seemed to be going for halls. Is anyone looking to flatshare with 1-2 other people? To be honest, I got sick of halls after my 2nd year as an undergrad and shared a flat with 1 other girl for the rest of my course. Now that I'm returning to uni after a few years in the workforce, the idea of living in halls again does not appeal. The other private student accommodation with 5-10 people aren't really appealing either. What can I say? I got used to having my own space.

Was thinking of getting a studio/1BR place by myself, but the kitchens are soooo tiny in most of them and those with proper kitchens tend to be on the absolute maximum of my budget. TBH, I have other things I'd rather be spending my money on than rent.

And yes, I like to cook (and eat), in case you're wondering why I need a big kitchen. So... anyone looking for a flatmate?

I'm definitely thinking of going private accommodation for year 2 and on, but figured for the first year I'll go with school accommodation, meet some people to get a flat with, etc.

I'm warming up to Dean's Court quite a bit, not so disappointed after all I guess .

Yeah, it was because of an employee discount of sorts. The one way full-price was only like $490 or something. Still not bad from Phoenix. It was on United and it was a student/youth ticket. It stops in DC, which is nice because my family is there and are going to come by and see me during my layover. It's nice, I have flown to LHR through DC before and it cuts it pretty much in half. There's a non stop British Airways from Phoenix but it was a perfect way to see the family one last time!

I am doing an MA Modern Languages. More specifically French sociolinguistics and continuing with Spanish too. I have been freaking out about what I am going to really research. I am quitting my job a month before going to just read non-stop. I wish I could gauge what level of preparedness I need to be at. It's stressing me out haha! It's quite a broad degree which is good but it's hard to know how to prepare!

Yes, the work thing, and the fact that I'll still be in Australia kinda prevents me from going. Won't arrive in the UK till 25 September, so I have 1 week to find a place. Should be fun... Ha!

Oh nice! Congrats on doing MA in modern languages!

I don't think you should stress out too much right now, but I do wish you luck on coming up with your thesis.

Right now, I just want to hear back from the accommodations office to know whether or not I got the residence I applied for. It's almost a month, and I have already emailed them more than three times.
