Higher English and Geography
I need to choose between higher English and geography and I'm not sure which to pick. I'm capable of memorising information easily, which I hear is an important element of the English exam but will probably help a lot in both. My main problem is timing. In SG English I struggled to plan and write and essay within the time, would I have similar problems at higher? I was able to get very high 1s for everything in my English folio, but as I've said timing is my issue. Since geography is mainly long/essay answers, would it be just as bad as English for someone who find it difficult to plan and write within the time?
Please share your experiences of higher English and geography.
It comes down to this: which would be more difficult to secure an A in, English or georgraphy?
Edit: I want to do some form of science at university, which means I do not need higher English.Last edited by AtomSmasher; 06-05-2012 at 21:51. -
Re: Higher English and GeographyActually, since I'm planning on doing science (still undecided on which), I only need SG English. I've even emailed 5 or so of my top choices of university and all of them said I wouldn't have any problems if I didn't take English. That being said, do you think English is more highly regarded than geo, even if it isn't necessary? If you took geo as well as English, how did the writing load for each exam compare? I know that for English you pretty much learn the answers inside out before hand, but which was tightest for time?(Original post by megara)
It depends what you wanna do in the future! If you want to go to uni, English is the best choice by far. Even some colleges look for at least a C. Timing is easily fixed in English if you practice enough
If you need anything else, quote or message me!

What other subjects are you planning on doing for Higher?
But I'm not really worrying about those. -
Re: Higher English and GeographyIt was compulsory for everyone up until 6th year at my school, but this year they've changed it. I thought I was incredibly lucky, not having to take it, but I'm having second thoughts.(Original post by Kiss)
Well you'd have to do English - I thought it was compulsary. At least in my school it was to do until 6th year. -
Re: Higher English and GeographySurely the actual content of English is relatively easy as well, or are there difficult concepts, etc. involved that I don't know about?(Original post by JaggySnake95)
Geography is worse than English for timing and memorising. However the content is relatively easy. -
Re: Higher English and GeographyIn Geography your answer is either right or wrong but English it's difficult to know how good your answer is.(Original post by AtomSmasher)

Re: Higher English and GeographyI'd stick to doing English if I were you. In my 5th year I did both Higher English and Geography and I can tell you that in geography you have to do **** loads. English you have revise a lot too but geography, like any social science, is probably something best left until 6th year when you have more free time.(Original post by AtomSmasher)

Re: Higher English and GeographySorry about the string of questions but what sort of "**** loads" is involved in geography? I would expect a fair bit of studying but surely that's the same with all highers. What makes geography different?(Original post by Kiss)

Re: Higher English and Geography
Personally I think you'd be crazy not to do English. It's an easy higher, it doesn't change from int2, a critical essay is still a critical essay close reading is the same where as in Geography it would be new topics etc. Also you're doing a lot of science subjects I just think diversity would show you up better to a university rather than doing all science-y subjects.

Re: Higher English and GeographyThere are 2 general topics geography is split into, urban and regional - within those you have to over 8 big topics with lots of detailed case studies in each. I can't remember all of it but I wrote about 20 pages in the exam.(Original post by AtomSmasher)

Re: Higher English and GeographyI didn't take both, but I know guys that did and said it was a lot of hard, hard work. I've always thought of English as a central, and like lots have said, compulsary subject. Even to get into uni, you might not need it, but after uni - looking for a job? English > Geography, I would say.(Original post by AtomSmasher)
