Should I learn to ride a bike?
So I've just realised that there is a woeful lack of KFC at my uni. The nearest one is nearly a 50 minute walk away - or a significantly shorter bicycle ride.

This presents a dilemma for TSR to ponder; should I learn to ride a bike so that this journey is possible?

In particular, is it worthwhile learning considering that the main benefit of riding a bike is the healthy living aspect, which would totally negated by all of the Colonel's goodness I would be stuffing down my gullet?

Note: I'm not learning to ride just for the sake of it. Nor can I afford a car, or spare the time for the walk.

I thought riding a bike was one of those things people got taught at, like, age five?
Either way, you may as well. You might end up really enjoying it or something and it's probably useful to have.

Yeah I was never taught. I was more of the stay indoors type.

I know it'd be embarrassing to start learning in public at my age, so if there is no real reason to (like getting to KFC) I wouldn't do it.

Riding a bicycle is a very basic skill. At some point in life you will probably have to ride one, and it would be even more embarrassing if you were unable to do it at the age of 30 or 40. Learn to ride one straight away. Not only are they a good transport option, but they are also excellent for fitness.

    4 actually...

I think OP means bike as in a real bike... not bicycle.

"I want to ride a bicycle, I want to ride a bicycle, bicycle"

Naah, (although I think you've realised now) but OP mentioned riding a bike being healthy, that's not gonna happen with a motorbike.

I learnt to ride a bike as an adult. :dontknow: I lived in an inner city area as a child, my parents thought a child being on a bike around so many cars was dangerous. I don't see why that should open me up to embarrassment or ridicule.

I plan to learn this Summer. My parents never taught me because I never asked to be taught. They assumed I wasn't too bothered.

I'm glad others have come out with not riding. People tend to stare in amazement when I say that I can't... there just isn't much call for it in suburban Manchester.

Any more ideas of (safe) secluded locations to learn are appreciated. I'd probably get stabbed or mugged if I tried Morrison's car park!
