Yeah but why not just buy the books instead of the Ipad?

I got an iPad at the beggining of the year for £259.99

The books they wanted to buy us for the first term alone came to £289.99 (due to the whole 'need the latest edition' crap that means we can't buy the books used)

so after downloading the PDF from the tinterweb I pretty much broke even, and on top of that, the usefulness of an iPad when it comes to going through lectures slides during lectures is huge
...and then obviously is the entertainment factor that comes in when you're out of uni
I'm not saying that everyone HAS to have an iPad...its just a list which is asking for an opinion...and tbh, having an iPad has helped me numerous times in my first year at uni

There are a lot of people who don't want to trust companies to store their private data, I don't see how I will ever use cloud services and data protection specialists are very critical about clouds. Plus, who wants to pay +200€ for 64GB instead of 16GB?

I don't really see how many Android Apps are supposed to be "imitations" - most apps are issued by independent developers that release them for both, iOS as well as Android.

Another point about the 4S I cannot understand is Bluetooth - it won't connect to non-Apple devices, including my SGS2. How stupid is that?

For music and movies, cloud data is brilliant. Some companies provide multiple backups. I agree, for personal and private data it isn't a solution, but whether people like it or not, the world is gearing more towards cloud data solutions. This can be seen not only in iCloud but in gaming, too.

I didn't mean the official apps were imitations, but many apps on iOS that are released when they don't have counterparts on Android are quickly swarmed to make money. Even when official apps are released, because the 'droid market isn't regulated as well, they remain.

And for the bluetooth - that's strange. My 4S connects quite happily to both of my family cars.
Definitely a smart phone. The ability to check your email, maps, etc. on the fly is invaluable.

Nietzsche?

These aren't any Nietzsche's, this a sea of Nietzsche.

Netbook; easier to carry to lectures/library and to have sufficient space to use it on the train.

If your phone can do that, doesn't that make it smart phone?

Kindle or eReader of some kind is a handy thing as well. No need to carry all those heavy books around.

Which phone is this? Chances are if it can do that, it's a smartphone!
For the thread, I just got a Kobo Touch eReader, it's fantastic, best gadget I own now I think (and I have most going).

Except it's not, it's a standard Sony Ericsson Elm (£100 on release two and a bit years ago), runs the same OS as all the Sony Ericssons have for like 10 years, no market, only basic Java apps etc..

Personally, I'm confused as to which way that is not a smartphone?

So. Many. Negs.

so many negs because you listed a load commodities which aren't technically gadgets. Gadgets are typically small mechanical devices or tools, esp an ingenious or novel one.

Why Kobo isntead of let`s say Kindle Touch? Did you do some research on it?

Yeah, the Kobo was coming out well against the Kindle in reviews, with the only negative really been no integrated amazon book store, which to me is not an issue. That was when they were the same price, the Kobo is now half the price at £54 with voucher (or £59 without on staples.co.uk). So to me it was a no brainer. I got it on wednesday and my dad and friend have seen it since and both ordered one instantly. Wired magazine rated it as the number 1 about the kindle as well (again at the same price).

Well if it is then every Sony Ericsson in the last 10 years is a smart phone as they run the same operating System, and I doubt anyone would say that they were, it doesn't have an app market, it isn't customisable, it really isn't a smart phone.

Wow, that is a great prize (60ish quid) This prize is prob. justa temporary thing right? Some cool promo... If that`s the case I should prob. buy one next week as even if it would be a bit worse than Kindle (which u say it isn`t) then for that prize it is still a steal . Gotta read more on it and I guess even if it isn`t as good funcionally as I need I should still buy it for this prize ...
Where again should I buy it u say?
Also, can you jail-break it (that would make it possible to read KINDLE eBooks)?
Also, does it have WiFi as well as I saw 2 on their website but both have "Coming soon" and not really helpful info.

Once again, cheers for the info (Esp. the promo prize  )

EDIT: Finally foudn the specs... I am so blind, lol. Still didn`t find where to buy it though
Anyway, what I really liked about Kindle Touch is the fact that it also supports audio-books but paying 2x more just for that feature ... nope, ty

EDIT2: I saw on one video review that reading PDFs is horrible on Kobo and most of my eBooks are in PDF format... kind of sucks ...

I own a Kindle (the 89.00 one), and I would be happy to answer any questions you might have about it  Personally, I think the Kindle range is the best in the e-readers out there. Yes they are more expensive than say the Kobo e-reader, but the quality of the device and also the eBook store that Amazon has for the Kindle is a major selling point. Definitely worth the money. Also, being a big book lover and having a Kindle means that I don't have to lug all my favourites books to Uni. Bonus!

That really depends on how smart you buy. I got my Kindle DX for 200 USD when they normally are 400 to 500 USD. Just take use of the Amazon Marketplace, sometimes you can get really good deals there.
