Re: Top 10 gadgets for universityI just edited it to explain more what I meant haha. I agree that sometimes you just need to know where to look(Original post by Chr0n)
That really depends on how smart you buy. I got my Kindle DX for 200 USD when they normally are 400 to 500 USD. Just take use of the Amazon Marketplace, sometimes you can get really good deals there.

Re: Top 10 gadgets for universityPDF is a really bad format and doesn't work well on any device, none of them recommend it, the Kobo has wifi and takes a much wider range of formats than the Kindle, if you use the Calibre software on it then it will convert your books as you transfer them.(Original post by THESHade)
Wow, that is a great prize (60ish quid) This prize is prob. justa temporary thing right? Some cool promo... If that`s the case I should prob. buy one next week as even if it would be a bit worse than Kindle (which u say it isn`t) then for that prize it is still a steal . Gotta read more on it and I guess even if it isn`t as good funcionally as I need I should still buy it for this prize ...
Where again should I buy it u say?
Also, can you jail-break it (that would make it possible to read KINDLE eBooks)?
Also, does it have WiFi as well as I saw 2 on their website but both have "Coming soon" and not really helpful info.
Once again, cheers for the info (Esp. the promo prize
)
EDIT: Finally foudn the specs... I am so blind, lol. Still didn`t find where to buy it though
Anyway, what I really liked about Kindle Touch is the fact that it also supports audio-books but paying 2x more just for that feature ... nope, ty
EDIT2: I saw on one video review that reading PDFs is horrible on Kobo and most of my eBooks are in PDF format... kind of sucks ...

Re: Top 10 gadgets for universityFair enough. PDFs are a pain on every 6" reader. If you want to take advantage of PDF reading, you should at least get a 9" reader, like the Kindle DX or others.(Original post by theronkinator)

Re: Top 10 gadgets for universityThe thing about Kindle is that it deosn`t support ePub which seems to be a format libraries use. So you can only buy books from Amazon.(Original post by GingeeBiscuit)

Do you use Calibre? Is a PDF book readable when u convert it using Calibre?
Kobo looks fine now but there are no video reviews with the new firmware (notetaking, etc.) Most of them are from 2011 and they weren`t that pleased with it if compared to other readers.(Original post by theronkinator)

+ u can`t read Kidnle books in Kobo
And I still didn`t find Kobo under the prize u said u bought it.
Big minus for Kobo is that their eBook store is the most expensive one.
I am contemplating buying a Nook touch as it can be rooted (it has Android)and then I can read any eBook I want (from BN,Amazon,Kobo), and use Android apps, etc.
I am jsut afraid of EU -support as I heard there might be some problems with BNobles.
I found very good prize for Kindle Touch on eBay as well (120 with postage included) and same prize for Nokok touch with postage included so I am really torn....Last edited by THESHade; 27-05-2012 at 17:49. -
Re: Top 10 gadgets for universityI have a tablet, it's a piece of crap for reading on, my Kobo is a billion times better. I told you what site I got it from don't know why you can't find it, but here is the link:(Original post by THESHade)

You can get books from loads of places and as far as I know calibre will convert kindle books to it. Notetaking I don't use so have no idea about that. -
Re: Top 10 gadgets for university
Could any of the e-reader owners comment on how they compare to tablets( or even laptops) in terms of not being able to interact with the subject and highlight/take notes?
E-book readers like the Kindle, the Nook and the Kobo are obviously great choices if you are into reading and they do have strong advantages as dedicated devices but are they really the best choice when it comes to heavy work with what you are reading?
Naturally some courses are bound to have more pure reading than others but I would expect even the text-heavy courses like Literature/History/Law(?) to require much on-text university work that is simply impossible/impractical on an e-book reader.Last edited by Kostaz; 28-05-2012 at 02:50. -

It's rather impractical IMO. However, I also find it very impractical on an iPad or even in Adobe PDF on my laptop.
What you would need to get is a device that lets you underline and take notes with a stylus on the device itself, directly into a PDF-file, in real-time, without lagging. I haven't come across a device that does that satisfactorily yet though :P -
Re: Top 10 gadgets for universityFor pure reading on, E-readers are leagues ahead of tablets due to the screen technology used. However for taking notes in a lecture, they're both dire, and simply not worth using. Unless you get a keyboard for the tablet, then it's a bit better, but if you're going to do that you may as well just use a small laptop with office on and save yourself a lot of effort and money.(Original post by Kostaz)

In short: E-readers are great for reading on, not usable for note taking. Tablets aren't as good for reading on, and still not worth taking notes on. -
Re: Top 10 gadgets for university(Original post by pepeeglesfield)
what do you think are the best/ most useful gadgets to have for uni?

Not much of a gadget (sheet of glass) but what can I say, whenever you see the TV crime crews casually writing on them, you start to drool.Last edited by The Polymath; 28-05-2012 at 13:46. -

Re: Top 10 gadgets for university
Ok, I decided to wait till July when Aamzon unveils their new Kindle Touch with Glowlight as then prizes might drop down, etc.
Also, I will ened to google a bit if buying from eBay is a good option cause I heard that u might pay huge import tax on products u buy via eBay (from US) and that would not save me any money ...
Anyway, thanks guys -
Re: Top 10 gadgets for universityYou can buy from ebay UK or Amazon Marketplace UK though.(Original post by THESHade)
