Would these people be rewarded in the afterlife?
This applies to all religions with an afterlife where you're rewarded if you're good or if you're sorry for any bad you've done.
And I'm also asking if YOU think that they should go to heaven or nirvana etc etc AND if you think they actually WOULD, if you apply the rules of a given religion . . .
Should/would someone whose mentally ill who'd commited crimes such as rape or murder ever have a good afterlife ie heaven/ nirvana . . . ?
In christianity, you're supposidly allowed into heaven if you're sorry for you're sins. But many people who're mentally ill who commit crimes/sins don't realise what they've done is wrong, thus they wouldn't be sorry for it. So what happens to them?
I think they should - they can't help what they did and didn't realise that it is wrong so it's not their fault. But in reality (if any religious afterlife does exist) I don't know what would happen. -
Re: Would these people be rewarded in the afterlife?
No they won't get to go to an afterlife, just like you won't get to go to one, just like I won't get to go to one. The idea of an afterlife is simply a way to get people into believing in a religion and therefore influence them, following the dogma of the religion is seen as a small price to pay in return for eternal life as the finite time on earth pales in comparison to eternity in paradise, it is simply a way to escape the most basic human fear, the fear of your own mortality. If the major world religions didn't preach of an afterlife they'd get a lot less people through their doors every weekend, fact.

Re: Would these people be rewarded in the afterlife?
In Islam, if you're mentally ill then you're not accountable for your sins in this life and thus get tested again in the afterlife. So you always get a fair chance.
Hadrat Aishah (r.a.) related that the Messenger of Allah (saws) said, "The pen is raised for three (meaning: there is no obligation or accountability upon them): one who is sleeping until he wakens, the child until he becomes an adult, and one who is insane until he becomes sane." [Related by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, at-Tirmidhi, an-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah, and al-Hakim.]

For a afterlife that includes nirvana, no. Because the person isn't/cannot become enlightened in a severely mentally ill state, he is not aware of what he is doing. Therefore with no awareness no realization can be achieved.
I don't believe in any religion, this is a question posed to those who do believe in an afetrlife or have knowledge of what would happen to someone if a certain religion was real.(Original post by IgnoranceIrritates)

Re: Would these people be rewarded in the afterlife?According to the philosophy, they would be reborn several times as a result of their karma until they reach human life again in which they have another opportunity to reach nirvana.(Original post by Clare~Bear)
