Go down as soon as the accommodation starts, its the best way to meet people, last year the official freshers week was really badly organised and generally a bit sh**. However there was good parties before freshers where people want to meet others as they were only ones in their flats.

UWE has an earlier start than UoB and many other universities (but also an earlier end to summer exams) and therefore it is good to get here quite early. It is worth pointing out that there will probably be various course introductions during Fresher's Week and (if you are in the Student Village or Carroll Court), an accommodation talk where the managers / wardens will try and scare you regarding fines for leaving doors open, having unattended cooking, etc. In practice, so long as your flat is clean and tidy for the termly room inspections, and you don't make too much noise, you should be OK.

The Fresher's Fair, held in the ECC, is one of the biggest in the country and is worth going to, as all the societies (or those that are well organised enough to try and recruit new members) are represented, as well as various local retailers / nightclubs, etc. There are usually free samples (such as Domino's Pizza), "useful" promotional gifts (I have a "Showcase Cinemas" bottle opener keyring, but the writing has worn off) and various discount coupons on offer.

The official UWE fresher's wristband cost £75 this year, with tickets for the showpiece All Stars Party costing £30. This has apparently been a significant increase from previous years. The official events include those based at Frenchay (including the All Stars Party) as well as some in town. There are various additional unofficial events, and if you're still in the mood for partying, UoB has its own Freshers Week in October...

It is also worth noting that UWE do not tend to be quite so organised for end of term events as other universities, however there is a Summer Ball this year at the St Matt's campus which students based elsewhere may also attend, and I understand that RAG are thinking of extending this to the main Frenchay Campus next year if this is a success.
