confused about something first principles and derivitives

    I could guess but it would help if you can tell me what "n" is.

    Is there a section of the notes before this that you haven't posted?

    Difficult to tell with such scant detail, but I suspect that you have to have to be able to differentiate x^n from first principals for rational n.
