    Torn between Kent & Sussex
I currently live in Kent, with my girlfriend and her family. She's already replied to her offers, and has Kent down as her firm, with Canterbury as her insurance.

Originally, I was fairly sure that Sussex was for me, but I'm now finding this decision very hard. I don't have much family support, and logistically, I might find living away quite hard. Furthermore, It would be a real strain for the relationship.

Alternatively, I like Brighton, and find the Falmer (where Sussex is situated) campus quite charming.

Kent & Sussex are fairly high on the rankings, they're both nice places to live (I know from experience). I suppose I'm just hoping someone can nudge me in the right direction.

    Thanks

It's hard to give a proper reply without knowing what course you want to study. Go with the uni you think you will be happiest at, course wise and lifestyle wise. Also, make one decision imagining you are not with your girlfriend, and another imagining you are. This should indicate whether you are mainly drawn to Kent because of your relationship.

    Thanks for your response.

It'd be Sociology at either. Sussex ranks higher, but it's nothing major.

I have thought about those things, and considered your latter point. I have to make a holistic choice though, embracing every factor (girlfriend-inclusive).

Ahaha this is so weird...I've been torn between those 2 for months and today I made the decision... SUSSEX!

It was hard, but here were my points:

Brighton is amazing, the thought of lounging on the beach in the summer is heaven.
The campus is gorgeous, it's classified as an area of outstanding beauty or something and I love the thought of living surrounded by all that greenery.
I like the sound of the atmosphere...if you want me to expand on that I will but I cba right now cause I'm on my phone and its a bitch to type on.
    Higher ranking.
It seems more innovative, when I've read about Kent for psychology it seemed a bit traditional and boring.

It was such a hard choice though! Kent seems to be more relaxed and less of a party uni if that makes any difference.

Personally on the open days I preferred sussex, but you have to go with what you liked....

You shouldn't make a decision just because of your girlfriend as this is your future, you need to consider the course details, the location e.c.t

I'd go with Kent, and even if you two split up it's still a great university

I'm going to Sussex this year, and my sister is at Kent, so hopefully I can offer some valuable advice.

In terms of reputation they're both good universities, however I would add that Sussex is usually considered higher in league tables.

Both are great cities to live in - Brighton is very Bohemian, whereas Canterbury has a quite cosy town feel, with the facilites of a city.

Kent is more of a campus orientated university in truth. Though Sussex also has a campus, most social events occur in Brighton, though at Kent they have a great club on campus and thus many decide to stay around for the evenings.

I've firmed Canterbury for Septemeber and it sounds great to me. I've also got friends at Brighton who love it. The two places are totally different but I'm sure you'd be able to have a good time at both!

Just make sure that whatever you decide is the right decision for you. I know you want to consider your girlfriend's needs and your future with her, but you are the one paying for this, you are the one who is going to be living there and studying there and you're the one who will need to find a job afterwards! I know it's hard but you've also got to consider what happens if you split up. If you choose Kent, choose Kent because you want to go there, not because it's convenient.

Hope you can make a decision that's right for you.

I chose Sussex. I really appreciate all your considered, helpful responses. Now I guess I'll just worry about Student Finance instead!

In a very simular position to you with the whole going to the same uni as boyfriend/or not picked sussex over york where he's going. If it's ment to be it'll last, plus it'll be amazing when you do finally meet up in the holidays!
