Current York students: I have some questions
    Hi!

    I have a few questions:

    1) How much do you guys usually spend on food/groceries per week? (if you are self-catered)

    2) What are the pros and cons of choosing self-catered/catered?

    3) Do you guys spend much on transport? If yes, how much do you usually spend per week?

    4) How much do you guys spend on laundry per month (or how often do you guys do your laundry?)

    5) How much do you guys spend on entertainment/social costs per month?

    Thanks!

    2) What are the pros and cons of choosing self-catered/catered?

    3) Do you guys spend much on transport? If yes, how much do you usually spend per week?

    4) How much do you guys spend on laundry per month and entertainment/social costs per month?

    Thanks!
    1) umm around £25 a week.
    2) I would suggest self catered, its not that much more expensive and the food is really really really nice lol you get your full meals a day like this or if you're not self catered you can simply pay for a full meal which is around £7 so kind of expensive.
    3) Transport is not really expensive, bus trips to city cost £2 return and there's a bus at uni which is free, (it goes across the entire campus) although what I and most other people do is cycle, get yourself a cheap bike and it should be ok.
    4) Laundry a month hmm including drying = £25 ish

    1) Anywhere between £10 and £20...depends how much I indulge in 'treats' haha. You can eat really cheaply if you're careful and like to cook a little, or really expensively if you want pizzas/loads of meat etc every day.
    2) I'm very glad I went self-catered, I like having the control over what and when I eat and the social aspect of cooking with people (although I guess with catered you get to eat with people). It also depends what kind of accommodation you want, I think in general the newer accommodation is self-catered and the older accommodation is catered.
    3) Transport doesn't need to cost you a penny...however, probably about £3 for taxis each night you go out, although you can walk if you're really short of money, and like the above poster said you can walk or cycle into town for shopping etc if you can be bothered. If not the bus is cheap enough. I would never spend more than £10 a week on transport even in a really busy week - in reality it's probably less than a fiver a week.
    4) Laundry in my college (Alcuin) is £2.20 a wash and £1 a dry although I never pay to dry anything, just get an airer thing and dry it in your room. Really depends how much washing you do!

Thanks! What about social/entertainment costs per month? I think I should rephrase the laundry question to: How often do you get your laundry done in a month?

The person who said £25 a month for laundry is definitely far from the norm! I wash clothes about once a fortnight and the machines are so big i can get a towel and bedsheets in there too. To spend £25 you'd have to wash twice a week which is plain unecessary.

    1) How much do you guys usually spend on food/groceries per week? (if you are self-catered)
i probably spend about ~£50 on groceries, snacks, takeaways p/week (most people in my house spend at least £30)

    2) What are the pros and cons of choosing self-catered/catered?
catered is only worth it if you're confident you're not going to skip the meals regularly. i went s/c because i wanted to dictate when i could eat, my sleep schedule is often wacky so that was a big factor.

    3) Do you guys spend much on transport? If yes, how much do you usually spend per week?
for the average week you're looking at about ~£8. town return is £2 on the uni bus, and a taxi between 4 to town is £2 p/person too, so it's pretty reasonable.

    4) How much do you guys spend on laundry per month (or how often do you guys do your laundry?)
i tend to start running low on clothes after about a fortnight, at which point it costs about £5 to wash it all and dry it.

    5) How much do you guys spend on entertainment/social costs per month?
perhaps £20 p/week? i have £100 a week to live on, and limit myself to 70, the leftovers from my food bills is what i have to spend on entertainment and such.

    1) How much do you guys usually spend on food/groceries per week? (if you are self-catered)
It generally is around 15-40, but sometimes if i do a big shop it can be as much as 80 . This term i haven't been shopping as much as normal, i've been very busy and used loads of tinned/dried/frozen food!

As for spending on other entertainment things... usually i don't spend more than £10 in a night, but i bought a dress the other day (what a rebel! :P ) which set me back £25 :O but i hadn't spent much this week otherwise so it's ok

    2) What are the pros and cons of choosing self-catered/catered?
As a music student, the flexibility of being able to eat what you want when you want is definitely worth going self-catered. I have had the occassional catered meal which has been a nice one-off but the meals are huge!

    3) Do you guys spend much on transport? If yes, how much do you usually spend per week?
I don't really go off-campus much, but it costs £2 return on the bus which is very good value! Sometimes I have to travel to Leeds which is £8 return.

    4) How much do you guys spend on laundry per month (or how often do you guys do your laundry?)
Haha, i don't really do my own laudry very often, my parents always take it home when they visit >_< But generally, it's about once a month and i put all my non-delicate items in the huge washers! the dryers are a waste a money, get a drying rack in your room, it'll save you a small fortune!

    5) How much do you guys spend on entertainment/social costs per month?
hmm... i don't go out very often and when i do, i don't spend much! For drinking/eating on campus, i would say i spend somewhere between £10 and £20 a month.

    Hope that's helped!

    silvergrandeur, sorry for jumping on your post (I'm kinda new to this) but I've also got a question (specifically for York students);

I'm currently filling out the student finance application and it's asking for the term time accomodation address but we're unable to apply for accomadtion until our results come in, so what address do we have to put in?
What address did you guys put in?

    Thanks
    Tom

Hi, I've firmed York as well so am in the process of applying for student finance.

The application form specifies that you should fill in your home address if you don't know your university accommodation address and then update it as soon as you know where you will be living.

Even prospective students for other universities don't know where they'll be living as they have applied for accommodation but it isn't guaranteed so basically everyone will need to put their home address for now and update it at a later time.

so you can still change the application after the 31st May, as long as you fill it all in before the 31st?
and what are you planning to study? :P

Yeah, you can go back in and edit your details at any time. Your account stays with you throughout your time at university because you reapply for student finance each year.

I'm hoping to study chemistry. What about you?

Aha, hopefully! The specific course I've applied for involves medicinal chemistry so I'm hoping to go into pharma. If that turns out to be the case then make sure you give me plenty of funding!

Re: Current York students: I have some questions
    1) How much do you guys usually spend on food/groceries per week? (if you are self-catered)

I spend around £20 per week on food. Although that does take into acccount the fact i bring up lots of tins/pasta ect when i come at the start of each term. Bring as much as you can (even on the first day) you might feel a bit sily but everyone does it and you will save lots of money over the term!

    2) What are the pros and cons of choosing self-catered/catered?

Self catered is easy, you can eat what you want when you want. Try getting up for 9am breakfast after a long night out!

    3) Do you guys spend much on transport? If yes, how much do you usually spend per week?

Nothing really. Everything is on campus, if you have to go to the Hes East then the bus is free. THe bus to town is 2£ return during the days. If you go to town on a night out a taxi shared between 4 will be about 1.50 each if that, and when its warm town is easy walking distance, less than 30 mins.

    4) How much do you guys spend on laundry per month (or how often do you guys do your laundry?)

Laundry is about 2.50 for a wash and 1.00 for tumble dry. I do about one wash every 10 days or something, but i dont use the dryers as they arent very good, just get a clothes rack and turn up the radiator. So yeh its not a big expense, generally just use change from a night out.

    5) How much do you guys spend on entertainment/social costs per month?

Depends on what you do. Personally, i spend around 200quid a year on the gym membership, then i normally go out twice a week and spend around £20 - 25 on a night out. But if you pre drink hard and cheap (or if you are a girl) and dont get too hammered then its possible to do a night out clubbing on less than 20. Then you might go to the pub or somehting like that.

Hope that was helpful give us a message if you have any more qs
