You have a 40GB TOTAL limit for talk talk. It's ADSL2, the 24MB speeds is like to be 3-4mbps(a HD movie wouldn't stream) during off peak and near 2-3mbps at peak times. That's if you live a half a mile out of the city center. Go a mile out and you should have a quarter of that.
And virgins is capped for max speed if you go past that limit they halve for the rest of the cycle(less than 12 hour periods).
I get 18-19mbps during non-peak slows to about 8ish or 6 during peak

You must live quite close, my cousins live around half a mile for it and get around 6mbps maximum during non-peak and around 3-4 during peak.

I think it's half a mile down the road or so, but this is kind of central Londonish

It'd have to be a an enormous exchange for it to manage all of London's traffic. That's better than average, they should use your household as an advertisement.

i think the deal for talktalk essentials is actually unlimited now not the 40gb it used to be.
i guess i'll have to talk it over with my housemates, but i think the money difference might be what wins it for talktalk. are speeds really going to be that slow if you're living in euston? it's bang in the middle of central london.

sorry, didn't really understand that last bit. what limit are you talking about?

There's actually loads of exchanges in London, but they would be larger and handle more than anywhere else in the country.
But I still lose 1 mbps somehwere between my router and phone line otherwise it would be higher,

Euston should be fine.............my exchange is at kentish town station, near there.
So yours should be fairly close and should be pretty strong considering the number of businesses and its importance nearby.
I get 18-19mbps during none throttled times, otherwise it drops to 6-8mbps

Every ISP has it. You have a downstream data limit which if you pass they cut your speed in half for each cycle(off-peak/night/peak)to stop you from being a bandwidth hog.
If there are more than 3 of you i'd recommend virgin/BT infinity. If not that considering you'll be in Euston i'm sure ADSL 2 shouldn't be too bad.

ahh ok, got it. there's only the three of us, so i think we might go with talktalk to start with and hope for the best! thanks for the help!

i'm thinking of getting this offer:

    sales.talktalk (dot) co.uk /product/broadband/essentials

half price broadband for the 12months (£3.25pm), £9.50 line rental per month (if you pay it all upfront) and free line installation.
works out to be £12.75 a month (which for a house of three people is £4.25 per person). and that's unlimited downloads and free weekend&evening calls.
and if the moneysavingexpert offer goes through you get a £50 tesco voucher on top.
downside is that their customer service isn't that great...

the deal expires at the end of july but it looks pretty good to me. opinions?
Whatever you do do not get talktalk. I know it is the cheapest but it will drive you insane very very quickly. I've had an engineer over 5 time in the last 6 months. I am promised up to 10mb/s I get 5mb/s very rarely because of distance 99% of the time my internet speed is less than 1mb/s. I'm switching to virgin.

probably because it's the secondary one. I still prefer DOCSIS. I lose 1.5mbps max from the exchange to my computer :P.
