Poll: Did you know anyone when you started University?
Hi, was just wondering if you knew anyone when you started University, and if not, was it daunting? Was it easy to make friends?
Did anyone find it difficult socialising or making friends?
I am starting at Lancaster in October and find it incredibly daunting that I am going to live in a foreign place, with people I don't know.Last edited by slacker07906; 10-05-2012 at 01:36. -
Re: Poll: Did you know anyone when you started University?
A lot of people go to uni without knowing people and make friends. I find as long as you are open and receptive to talking to new people in your first few weeks you'll get to know loads of people then, as the year goes on you find your group.
If you struggle within the first few weeks it isn't the end, you can meet likeminded people at societies and volunteering.
You'll be grand. -
Re: Poll: Did you know anyone when you started University?I didn't know anyone at my Uni. It was daunting in the lead up because the nerves really do kick in. But once you're there everyone also wants to make friends, it's just a matter of starting conversations with them. In freshers week the most asked questions will be for your name, your course and where you're from.(Original post by slacker07906)

Once you talk to someone for a bit invite them to go explore with you, check out where the local supermarket is etc or come to one of the first social events with you or propose going as a group. When it comes to your first lecture and such, talk to someone who is waiting outside the room with you, casually ask if they're waiting for that lecture then just carry on talking. Or don't sit on your own, sit next to someone and try and engage them in conversation before the lecture starts.
I don't know of anyone at Uni who hasn't made at least a few friends, even if they didn't get on with their flat. The guy in the flat next to mine brought a ton of celebrations and asked people if they wanted a 'friendship chocolate.'

Re: Poll: Did you know anyone when you started University?it's really easy. Most people don't know anyone. Especially if you're in halls, get involved in societies, speak to your classmates... It's a silly thing to worry about(Original post by slacker07906)

Re: Poll: Did you know anyone when you started University?
I knew 2 people who goes to the same uni as me
, I also know someone who went the a different uni but still in the same city so met up with him a few times as well. Although I knew friends from before, it didnt stop me from making new friends...I made more friends from my course rather than my halls-not very sociable halls.

Re: Poll: Did you know anyone when you started University?
I joined all the Freshers groups on Facebook and found people on my course or in my building and had a quick chat with some of them before I started. It's quite a good conversation starter when you're there.
But other than that, I knew absolutely noone in the beginning and making friends was easy. Be easy-going, open to try new things and strike up a conversation with that other person looking just as nervous as you do! -
Re: Poll: Did you know anyone when you started University?
I knew one person, but I am not the type to mix business with pleasure - I am not massively interested in being best friends with anyone from university (I suppose largely because I haven't met anyone there yet that I actually like that much).
I have plenty of people I'm on good terms with, though. Practically everyone in my tutorials. -

Re: Poll: Did you know anyone when you started University?
I'm off to Lancaster too

But last year (did a foundation course) I didn't know anyone, and everyone else was pretty much in the same boat. It's pretty awkward for the first week or so, but after a little while you just get to know people and it all becomes more relaxed. Living on campus/in student flats as well pretty much makes you go and talk to new people. -

I'll be going to uni in Sept which is 6 hours away from home (where i am now) and know of absolutely nobody in my year going to the same university. Obviously I chose to do this, and I'm looking forward to this huge change and I'm sure i'll make lots of friends come sept! I've already joined the facebook group for people on my course.. you guys could probably do this too
