    I need an A*
If I got an A in my coursework which is worth 60%, what will I need to get in the exam to get an A* overall?

Depends on whether it is a high A, low A, UMS scores, subject, etc... There are various factors needed to be considered before fully getting a reliable answer.

    Please provide more information.

    80%-89% = a
    90%-100%= a*

No offense but how can you possibly "need" an A* in Media Studies? That I am afraid will never win you a job.

Do they work it out as an average from the grades you have or do they add up the scores and work it out like that?

If you have 85% of the marks from coursework which contributes to 60% of the total marks then you have 51% of the total marks so far. To get an A* you need 90% of the total marks available - This means you need to get 39% of the total marks available from the rest of your course out of the 40% available, or 97.5% of the remaining marks.
