    How is the Old Mill?
    Hi,

I'm aware there are a few threads like this, but mostly they cover Uni halls rather than private halls.

I'm going to Abertay to study Computer Games Technology after the summer, and I've looked at halls there, though looking into it further, i'm not sure if I can afford them, so i'm looking at alternatives.

I've seen the Old Mill mentioned, can anybody say how good/bad it is, anything about it that would be good to know before considering applying for it?

    Thanks

    I'd avoid.

Try the Hub or Keiler Court

Hungover reception, one bathroom per 5 people, tiny rooms and kitchen with next to zero furniture and minimal amount of natural light, electrical sockets amount (4 in total if i'm not mistaken - geek's nightmare), very small desk in room, old building in general. Location around the corner to nightclubs, pubs, one of city main roads and casino - don't expect it to ever be quiet.

I heard bad reviews about the Old Mill a few years back from friends, although I'm stuck in the same boat as you. I really can't afford the halls, so it looks like I'll just have to apply for OM and hope for the best.

I'd look into private flats in that case. One of my friends rents a flat for £200/month

I'm staying at Old Mill. Have know lots of friends that have stayed here in the past. Far better than university halls and other private accommodation. Rooms are a lot bigger some containing double beds, bathrooms contain baths as well as showers and if you aren't keen on sharing facilities with lots of people then go for a two bedroom flat rather than a four/five or six bedroom one.
They are all being refurbished this year. New kitchens and flooring going into every flat. During the course of the year they hold parties where you can meet people.
Only thing i'd be wary about is your electricity/bills usage as they can charge you extra if you go over, so just use electricity wisely by switching off and all.
    All in all great place.

Yeah, Don't see what you're all complaining about - back in my day as a first year CGT funnily enough, I stayed in Taymills - Old Mills shabby next door neighbour. Meanwhile one of my best friends stayed in the Old Mill, so I ended up spending a huge amount of time there very jealous of them all with there internet, better equipped rooms and common area.

Regards the 4 plug sockets, isn't that what extension leads are for? The loud noise is about the only problem but if you have even a mediocre pair of headphones then it's not a problem, even without I never lost any sleep.

Tbh I wouldn't worry, I bet it's not as bad as people make it out to be.

I'm just leaving student accommodation in Portstewart and if the only thing you have to worry about in OM is lack of plug sockets then you're doing well.

You're telling me, I spent 5 hours cleaning the living room/kitchen when I moved in cause I found a dead bird in the chimney and maggots in the kitchen. We also got a warning for noise cause 2 people were talking at 12:30 one night. Old Mill sounds like heaven haha!

Environmental sustainability that's cool! Yeah I'm doing a Masters in Games development, I'm primarily a concept artist so painting's my thing. I didn't realise there was an early booking discount, must look into it. I really cant wait, the Old mill has a common room with pool tables and couches, which is pretty awesome!

Haha me too! I guess this is technically my 5th year, but it'll be my second time in Student Halls, can't wait to start making games in Abertay!
