Will be in September for the same courses.

I'm sure the teaching is good enough. No matter what you'll still have to do the work and study, can't blame poor teaching if you don't put the effort in yourself

We'll see for ourselves I guess. Two subjects and one involving learning a language, it won't be simple. lol

    Hey guys,

I'm currently at Brookes, just finished my first year, at the start of the year there were three people who were doing this combination (including me). Now there is only me doing this combination from the 2011/12 entry; so if you want to ask anything then feel free.

The teaching is alright, it can be quite intense at times, and sometimes you may need to ask the lecturers to go over things again, whether it is arrangements for coursework, or actual stuff in the lectures.

I am enjoying it though, really good atmosphere - depends what side you go with though really; the simple fact is I don't know anyone on the Computing side anymore (Wheatley Campus) as it's out in the middle of nowhere. You tend to find this happens, because the two campuses are far away, and if you live on Wheatley then it's almost impossible to socialise (don't live at Wheatley).

Feel free to PM me, or reply to this, I will try to reply when I can ^^ ~

What are you guys more interested in, Japanese or Computing, why are you choosing this combination?

    ~Matt

I was originally going for Computer Science but I noticed I could combine it in Japanese during a boring day at college while looking through courses.
I already had some knowledge of Japanese and I was able to read it, albeit slowly.
So I thought why not go and do both the courses together? Although I had to take a gap year in order to redo my GCSE Math/English for the minimum requirements.

Doing it like this gives me the satisfaction of doing the subjects I want to do and providing better access to sources to further make the process easier.

Computer Science and Japanese go hand-in-hand in my view, as Japan is one of the leading countries in technology. On the other hand, Japan still has strong ties with its traditions and history which also appeal to me.

Looking forward to starting already :P

    Hi,
Will you be doing a year abroad in Japan? And the computer science, how difficult would rate it?

    Thanks

I also had a similar experience, I was at college, had completed my UCAS application, then I noticed that this course existed; so had to change my UCAS, but by the time it was re-processed the course was full (Japanese Side). So I had a gap year, worked full-time to get some monies, and here I am now. That is also the same reason I thought of doing the course, it sounds like an interesting combination, and other people seem to say that too.

The year in Japan is compulsory, so yes I shall be, it is usually in your 3rd year - and will most likely be the greatest experience ever. There are a number of Universities to choose from aswell, from all over Japan - Tokyo seems to be calling for me at the moment.

Difficulty is relative to what experience you have, I personally found first year Computer Science quite easy as I did a BTEC National Diploma for IT Practitioners before, however I know some people who had no computer experience what-so-ever, and they struggled. So it really does depend on what you did in College / Sixth, and how technically minded you are. Most of the modules you will do anyway are taught at introductory level, since it is the first year, so they give you a foundation to work on - so if you don't have much experience, don't let that put you off.

My friends said the same thing who went onto doing Computer Science this year while I took my gap year. And that the first year of Computer Science just aims to get everyone at the same level.
I'm not sure what they teach you in sixth form in regards to computing, I heard it was a disappointment.

I guess that means VB again... Sigh.
I did the same BTEC as you too btw :P

Anyway, I guess that's more energy that I can put into the Japanese side of things while everyone gets to the same level in Computer Science.

I'll be looking forward to seeing you around at the university Keep in touch with us soon-to-be-first-years, eh?

You don't do VB in Computer Science, you do Java (or a Java derivative) in the first year, then I think in second year you go on to more object-oriented programming languages, C++ etc. Being Combined honors though, I don't really get much of a choice in terms of extra programming modules - there is like one module I can actually choose to do, once the compulsory modules for both Japanese and Computer Science are out of the way.

YAY! For BTEC Nat Dip IT Prac ... Which has such a darn long name ... >.< I loved doing that course, I felt that in a way Year 1 just reiterates some of the stuff we did in the BTEC.

You will definitely notice me ... in the winter I wear a quite bright yellow Pikachu hat ... ~ lawl, and If you join the Japanese Society I will also be running the Anime Night for that / going to Society events; so keep an eye out! ~

Took me two years to memorize the full name, by then the course was over. xD

    Thank God, no VB. lol.
Java's alright, I play around with it from time to time.

So you're like limited to the amount of modules you can take? I was looking at the modules over on the website and I was hoping that I could take as many as I wanted to... I would be putting myself up for a workaholic, I know. If only one day was longer than 24 hours ><.

I'll be sure to join the Japanese Society, it sounds fun! I'm in awe of your Pikachu hat lol.

Every student takes a minimum of 8 modules. This is to pass the degree. Bare in mind this is quite a workload of 4 modules per semester. it is possible to take an extra module providing it is a language. (not sure for your course as you are studying a language already) Any additional modules will cost you and it is around £600/700 per module currently. bare in mind this is pre fee hike

VB was a nightmare, and just horrible to work with. I am currently a lover of PHP, and am planning to do the Web Design module aswell. But yes, as the person above me said you can take the equivalent of 8 CREDITS a year, however in reality with Japanese Combined it's like 9 MODULES worth of work - this is because the Reading and Writing Module spans over the whole year, and is still only worth 1 credit (instead of 2). It confused me when I joined ... but if you do have any problems when you choose modules, you can go to a PIP help class thing, or see the Academic Management Office at Brookes, and they will be able to help you. Trust me, the PIP system at Brookes confuses everyone when they first use it >< ~

I believe there will be a Japanese Society stand on at the Freshers' Fair, but that still needs to be confirmed and what-not.

I now leave you with a lovely picture of me with my Pikachu hat ... wow I had brown hair back then ... lawl

I used to do a lot of PHP but recently I've barely touched it. I had a web developer job but they gave me more designing to do than actual programming - which I signed up for in the first place.

Right now I'm just trying to better my design abilities so I can freelance during university.

    Loving the Pikachu. :3

I'll be sticking to what they give me then. xD
Wished they let us pick more though, there's a bunch of modules that I wanted to do. Oh well.

The modules that you will have seen around will be what is covered over the entire course of your degree. Over your degree you will take 24 modules so lots of variety!
