Re: What social class are you? (Poll)Scottish class?(Original post by Mr Dangermouse)
I'm actually not sure.
Dads a cop, mums in admin, we live in an urban rural 3 bed semi and whilst we can afford to treat ourselves on a household income slightly over 50k, we can't go beserk.
Lower middle? -

Re: What social class are you? (Poll)
I don't really care about class and think that it is rather outdated nowadays and the concept of it has changed over time from being more about social standing to more about money. My dad would say he was 'working class and proud' but my mum comes from middle-class roots. I don't care and think you should be branded or restricted in any way - if you work hard and become wealthy with a high social standing, good for you, but equally if you have a simple lifestyle and are happy with it that's what matters.

Re: What social class are you? (Poll)
You won't get accurate answers because survey after survey shows that people do not accurately state their own class position. Many people who are actually working class, for example, describe themselves as "middle class". A very large study commissioned by the BBC last year discovered people like taxi drivers, hairdressers and plumbers calling themselves "middle class". Sociologists and professional statisticians for the government describe all of those occupations as "working class".
There is also very considerable confusion about class generally - is it a matter of accent? Wealth? Upbringing or current position?
What do the classes mean? Many people don't know. Does "upper class" for example only mean being part of the aristocracy? Or would the owner of a large business or just someone rich be "upper class"?
Is Alan Sugar "working class" or "upper class"? -
Re: What social class are you? (Poll)
Upper working class.
Single parent family, mum raising me on a mixture of minimum wage income and welfare support whilst my Dad works in a factory. It is almost cliche.
On the other hand, I personally save a lot (savings are almost a hall mark of MC), go to University and post on a forum called The Student Room.
I class myself as working class rather than MC however because: I have to work not for fun, but because I have to pay for the necessities of life (I earn about £400 p/m, £300 goes on bills); I own no assets like a car, property and so on; and I am restricted more than most in terms of financial capacity - I have to go to my local Uni because we can't afford to send me away.
Upper because I'm at Uni, doing a fairly MC discipline and I want to go into further education.
On reading that Wiki article, certainly by interests MC. I spend most of my income on books and stuff, highly politically engaged and so on. But on the other hand I feel I have this because I have worked myself for it, saved and been thrifty, managed my money well which, after a year of working and saving, has given me the ability to be a bit more superfluous.Last edited by CUFCDan; 11-05-2012 at 11:00. -
Re: What social class are you? (Poll)
Underclass I think.
Dad has a degree in something and works as a manager in the UAE. Dad's adoptive parents are upper middle class and used to own a mansion house... Is an expat and no contact/CSA etc. Dad's biological are very working class with twinges of *definite* underclass sadly.
Mum is disabled and a carer so long term unemployed. Hadn't worked since 1990/1991 and then did a two year stint (2004ish) and hasn't worked (in paid employment) since - so rely on benefits. Mum's family though are generally middle class with twinges of upper middle class - quite a few people in managment, a lot of people in very high up positions in Army/RAF/Navy.
So could say underclass by money and housing, but middle class in everything else!
Accent wise I've a slight speech impedement but say "Th" for "F", "Haith" for "H" and if at home speak in local dialect. If at uni I switch to English.Last edited by daisydaffodil; 11-05-2012 at 11:09. -
Re: What social class are you? (Poll)Probably roll with this.(Original post by JCC-MGS)
If you didn't grow up on the estate or in low-income housing you're not working-class, I think quite a few people are gassing judging by the guy who claimed he's working class cause he works in a ****ing coffee shop
To me it is in terms of your relations with social institutions that determines your class. Not that you work necessarily. I know a lot of MC kids with wealthy families that work, but their income is spent on leisure activities, whereas some like myself have to work to pay things and if they don't work they're ****ed. -
Re: What social class are you? (Poll)I reckon Lord Sugar is currently upper class, after all he is a Lord and very rich, but he was brought up working class and he still comes across working class in some ways.
I wonder if you are automatically the same class as your parents? My family is upper-middle but we have family money that means my sister and I wouldn't have to work particularly hard if we didn't want to - maybe that make us "upper". -
Re: What social class are you? (Poll)
If anyone says Sugar is WC deserves to be expelled from University. He's a multi-millionaire Lord who employs thousands of people and has his own TV show.
Just because he started off selling electronic parts at 15 or whatever doesn't mean he can stay one of the roughians forever. -
Re: What social class are you? (Poll)lol(Original post by whiteing)
my parents would be upper middle or upper, but like me hate the idea of classes.
Would rather be working class and happy, over some money hungry upper class.
If i was to have my own class system it would be how much each person would contribute to society
People like doctors, mechanics, posties, cleaners and such would all be together on top
And then people only care about money and putting themselves higher than overs would be on bottom
bit contradicting :')
How exactly do postal workers and cleaners 'contribute the most to society'?
It's not as if they perform any great feat. -
