Marine Biology 2012 (UoL)
Heeeeeeyyy!
I was just wondering if there were anyone here that's going to go study Marine Bio in Liverpool next September? Would be nice to hear about people!
Also if there are anyone who is already studying there or has studied there, would be nice to here about the course, what's it like etc.
I already have an unconditional and can't wait. Now I just want to get a response from the accommodation office! I wanna know where I'm going to live!
Oh by the way, I'm from Finland, what about you?
See you in September! -
Re: Marine Biology 2012 (UoL)
Well, I'm not from the UK and the first semester was quite tough for me, so I'm probably not objective at all. What I remember is a huge amount of time spent at the uni, boring theoretical modules and bad weather
Second half of the year was much better as practicals started - we had some labs, one day field courses and two big residential field trips in spring (to south Wales and Northern Ireland), which were absolutely amazing for me as finally I realised why I decided to do this course. Modules tended to be more marine biology-related instead of things like plantsµbes (as in 1st semester).
Department itself is very small and linked with ecology&environment course, which made around 25 people together. I don't know actually, if it's better than big groups, but it's certainly a big advantage in the field.
Staff is amazing in most cases, they really know what they're doing and you can actually see their research outcomes. It impressed me, I must say, how passionate are they.
What you have to consider, are costs. I now saw that you're not from the UK, so you probably don't have any financial help from the uni, as me (I'm from EU as well and we're generally treated as home students, but in terms of maintenance loans/grants or even scholarships we're not eligible to anything unless you live here for three or more years). Apart from living costs (it's not very bad, actually, but I wasn't prepared at all for buying things like bus tickets - probably it was too obvious to consider) there are specific course costs. You've got to have waterproofs - jacket, trousers, walking boots and wellies. In my opinion this is a must, but on the last field course I still saw people in jeans or trainers (?), so you'd better prepare for this. Also, you have to pay for residential trips - we had three in total, and they costed respectively 50, 200 and (probably) around 220 pounds.
Ask me specific questions, cause I ran out of ideas what to say next
