    Binomial + Sequences
    Hiya TSR people
    Binomial problem:
    3i) Find and simplify the first four terms in the binomial expansion of:
    (1+0.5x)^1^0

    Did this bit fine. 1+5x+11.25x^2 +15x^3

    ii)Hence find the coefficient of x^3 of:
    (3+4x+2x^2)(1+0.5x)^1^0

    what I did which is wrong is:

5x \times 2x^2=10x^3

11.25x^2\times 4x=5x^3

4.44x^3 \times 3 = 13.3x^3

then

10x^3+5x^3+13.3x^3=28.3x^3
    the answer is actually
    100x^3
    which is then 100.

    How am I meant to do this?

    Sequences help:

    A sequence U1 u2 u3 is defined by Un=5n+1
    Another sequence W1 w2 w3 is defined by W1=2 and Wn+1=5Wn+1

    find the value of p so that
    Up=W3

    how do I find p? I don't know where to start.

    stuff in size one font is meant to be subscript but I can't find the command for it.

    Thanks in advance

    4*11.25 isn't 5
    I also don't know why you're doing 4.44*3, it should be 15*3.

    For the first one;

    where did 4.44x^3 come from? it should be 15x^3 \times 3 = 45x^3

    Also 11.25x^2\times 4x=45x^3

    so summing up 10x^3 + 45x^3 +45x^3=100x^3

    For the second;

    w_2 = 5w_1 +1 = 5 \times 2 + 1 = 11
    w_3 = 5w_2 +1 = 5 \times 11 + 1

    now u_p = 5p +1

    So set u_p = w_3 and sub in the expressions for both to find p.

    As slumpy says you have some pretty odd calculations. First 4*11.25 needs checking and where did the calculation below that come from?

    I'm not really sure about the numbers but recently I've been pressed wrong buttons on the calculator which isn't helping much
