AS Spanish Reading, Listening and Writing Mon 14th (AQA)
    Hi

Is anyone taking this exam? How are you preparing? Are you nervous?

I am most dreading the first bit (the listening) and the last bit (the essay).

Reasons, justify those reasons, give examples, use complex constructions while maintaining accuracy, use the topic specific vocabulary etc etc

For writing, the most important thing is to actually answer the question rather than write everything you know about the topic. Keep it focused, pick 2 or 3 points and explore them in depth.

I'm really confused with the writing, last time I wrote 5 points in depth, got very low marks for content, and according to my language teachers, I didn't make enough points- should have made 10 points. Can anyone clarify this? Everyone I speak to seems to have a different idea of what the right thing to do is!

When they mark writing, they give content ticks. You get ticks for justifying your statement and giving examples. What that means is that you don't get ticks for simply stating the opinion "A mi modo de ver, hoy en dia no es demasiado importante casarse" but you would get ticks for justification "No suporto el matrimonio porque cuesta mucho dinero organizar la fiesta". Examples also count as content points, "en mi opinion, los problemas mas comunes entre parejas son....".

Hope that makes some sense. There is no magic formula for writing, 20 content ticks do not necessarily equate 20 marks for content, just try to answer the question, back up your ideas. Get into the question. Give personal experience or experience of people you know... or you can just make it up!

I find that quality of my writing depends on the question, so I am hoping there will be at least one question tomorrow that I can relate to.

Gaah.. every time I sit down to try and write an essay, even open book, I get stumped.

It asks for your opinions a lot so I don't know how personal to make it. I am so not looking forward to this.

Forget about the exam (easier said than done, I know) but think about how you feel about the issue. Last summer there was a question on holidays and what type of holidays is best. If you got a question like that, think about yourself, do you prefer to lie on the beach or do something more active? Why? What does your family like to do? What would you like to do? (this is great because you could include imperfect subjunctive, "si tuviera dinero, iria a Espana"). Try to think about some opposing views and criticise them.

    ull be fine
look at the examiner reports as they put useful info and sometimes give you points that people have said on pervious essays - which you can use in yours if you get a similar essay title also in ur intro (this isnt compulsary) try putting a fact. I have a feeling family might be an essay title

You guys are probably alright, I just put a test essay I did under exam conditions just now up on here and it's really crap.

Ugh. I am dreading tomorrow. I think I give up on revision now, my brain is utterly fried.

Past papers are the way forward! Especially for the grammar exercises.

tbh i think there is a high chance of los medios coming up... i swear its been on every past paper?? what AQA do is chose one essay title from each of the main topics; los medios, la cultura de todos los dias, la vida sana and la familia y las relaciones...k u probs already know that...
june 2011 was la cultura de todos los dias, los medios and la vida sana
jan 11 was la vida sana la familia y las relaciones and los medios

I´m hoping either an essay question on health or on technology will come up because those are the ones I know.

Fashion, music and cinema are the least that I have revised

I´ve now done all the past papers, well I´m starting the last one.

Someone said social networking might come up as an essay so I´m thinking about that and someone else said that family relationships might come up so i´m revising that.

I WILL BE VERY GLAD AFTER IT IS OVER TOMORROW LOL!

I'm really confused because last time I made 5 points, with loads of explanation etc. and only got 12 for content, so this time I've been told to make more points. I think you're right about the most important thing being to use loads of real-life examples i.e. with publicity, mention specific adverts, as the examiners reports and exemplar answers seem to indicate that too! Same, some questions are much easier to write good answers about. Friendship has never come up before, so I think it might come up tomorrow, but I'm not sure I'd be able to write a particularly good essay on it!
Good luck for tomorrow, I'm sure you'll be great .

And good luck to everyone else sitting the exam as well .
