Standard Grade Modern Studies 2012
I actually think that was an okay credit paper, only a few issues.
First isssue
Nobody I know could find a reason to support the man who made the statement about STV and FPTP. Since the country with the lowest increase in turnout was Wales, they would have more conservative MSPs with STV than with FPTP. He said "fewer."
With the question on why some Americans have been very successful I only made three points but I developed them a lot so they were like 3/4 of a page; because you can get up to 3 marks for each point.
With the NATO question I couldn't really think of anything they had done to prevent an attack, so I just put increased defence systems and nuclear weapons.
Also, on the conclusion question I think Promise 2 was quite difficult but I put that they were unsuccessful because countries like Canada hadn't met the target.
I think that was definitely harder than most of the past papers, and I'm actually quite annoyed since I got 72/72 in my prelim
But I'm still hoping for a 1

Re: Standard Grade Modern Studies 2012
Nobody I spoke to after the exam got the suppose/oppose and in fact quite a lot of people said they ended up leaving it out.
I ended up going with opposing his view on the STV/FPTP delivering Wales fewer Conservatives as the number would increase from 8 to 10, i think? And I supported on his view on voter turnout (although, it was very unclear) as Scotland was the only UK nation to have lower than United Kingdom average voter turnout in both years that were mentioned (I think NI and England had lower in one year, but not both 2005 and 2010). I have no idea whether that will be correct or not but it was the best guess I could come up with. The wording was quite unclear tbh. -
Re: Standard Grade Modern Studies 2012Yeah I wrote about the American dream too, namely ethnic minorities not being discriminated against, being able to become successful no matter how poor you are and america's ideology - capitalism.(Original post by eilidhb)
No one got the support/oppose question in my exam either :L also what was the answer for the one about the Americans being successful? I wrote about the American dream :/
Do you think the SQA have made a mistake in the paper? -
Re: Standard Grade Modern Studies 2012I thought the wording was fine, just blatantly obvious that both statements should be opposed!(Original post by andrew_don)

Re: Standard Grade Modern Studies 2012
I found that paper...okay, it was quite tricky in some parts though. Question 2 really threw me, for the 8 markers about NATO and the USA I just rambled on, especially for the NATO question, I don't even know if I was talking about the right things! For the 8 marker on EMA, Job Centre Plus, etc, I don't think I did too well either...
My sister sat the exam as well, and she said for Q2 the answer is actually Scotland, although it took her quite a while to figure it out.
I managed to get 88% KU and 84% ES in the prelim, but here...to be honest I think I'd be lucky to scrape a 1. -
Re: Standard Grade Modern Studies 2012
I never got the first ES question about the support and oppose one either but we went up and showed our teacher it and I can't remember exactly what country it was but the first part of the statement was right,it was badly worded as it meant one country who was lower than the uk average in both 2005 and 2010, not only one in 2005 and one in 2010, hope you get what I mean haha
other than that and the NATO question, the paper was alright

Re: Standard Grade Modern Studies 2012
The support/oppose question was really tricky to begin with and I left it, but then came back to it later and got the answer. It was that Scotland was the only country which was below the UK average both in 2005 and 2010. The wording was pretty daft though and I don't know if anyone else in my year got it.
I've also just realised that I totally messed up the NATO question. I didn't read it properly so I started rambling on about airport security, stop and search, etc, so I will probably get no marks for that question.

Re: Standard Grade Modern Studies 2012
I just feel so depressed right now....

The first two questions were a breeze and I was feeling really confident, but then Q2 really threw me off, and I didn't feel I did so well in the rest of the exam either. I also messed up the NATO question and rambled on about airport security and MI5, do you think I'll get any marks for it? I think the SQA are going to have to give us free marks for Q2 - regardless of whether there was a right answer, no student sitting that exam today should have had to waste precious minutes just trying to figure out what that Q was asking! I demand that the SQA pay me a pound for every second I wasted on that question. I know I also messed up the EMA, Skillseekers question. I feel sick knowing how much I got wrong...August 7th couldn't seem further away right now. -
Re: Standard Grade Modern Studies 2012You're not the first person to say the messed up the NATO question now, why do you think you went wrong? Because I went down the route of airport security aswell for one of my examples - just asking why you think this was the wrong route to go down?.(Original post by ladymarshmallow)

Re: Standard Grade Modern Studies 2012
Yeah, I think MI5/security is right actually because the question specifically said what can NATO members do, not NATO on its own. Hopefully I might pick up a few marks there because I was panicking a lot because I thought I'd totally duffed the question.
However, just realised that for the USA conclusions questions, I wrote my conclusion about the parties supporting Obama, but I only wrote about Democrat support. Whoops! I must have forgotten to write about the Republicans as well. -
Re: Standard Grade Modern Studies 2012I wrote about terrorism and cyber terrorism. I wrote about the underwear bomb and SOCA getting hacked into.(Original post by anthonyfl)
For NATO I wrote about the threat from terrorists such as the Taliban and the threat from Iran's nuclear weapons program.

Re: Standard Grade Modern Studies 2012
For NATO I wrote about Russian aggression, nuclear proliferation, organised crime and international terrorism, but I'm not sure the responses I wrote about were particularily strong...
Also, I spent so long on that support/oppose question because I was confused that I didn't even finish the paper!

Re: Standard Grade Modern Studies 2012
Hello! I spoke to my teacher about the support/oppose question and it turns out the SQA got the question worng. To insure that they were right in saying this, all the Modern Studies staff tried the question, the advanced highers tried the question and a depute head attempted it too. All the schools in my area are making complaints to the SQA to have the question removed etc but in order to boost chances, if you can ask your school to do the same, that would be great!
But I'm still hoping for a 1
