Well running is just more intense then. If you put the cyclists in a 2 hour race they would go faster, if you got the runners to do a similar thing to the cyclists they would run slower.
It simply doesn't work like that. A top athlete can virtually fully recover in one day and sustain near maximum performances on consecutive for a certain number of days at their top pace before their body can't take it any more.

Deca ironman triathlon. A 24 mile swim, 1100 mile cycle then a 262 mile run. Record is about 190 hours, just under 8 days.

    Probably triathlon.
Or this. You have to be very good in three disciplines and then do them consecutively in a race.

Open water swimming perhaps...? Boxing and MMA also look extremely tiring.

Although probably not the most exhausting, motor sports, such as F1 and MotoGP, put a surprisingly large strain on the body.

There is a study by Dr James Nicholas where each professional sport is broken down into categories (speed, strength, agility etc). The results were: 1- American football, 2- ballet, 3- hockey.

theres a lot of physically exhausting sports!!

I think at highly proffessional level things like open water/triathlon are obviously very demanding.

But if we're just talking sport generally then I think sports that use a lot of the bodily muscles i.e. gymnastics, pole fitness, martial arts etc

I think Strongman competitions are amongst the most physically gruelling. Not only are the events extremely difficult, the training and conditioning required to compete is insane. Same can be said for mixed martial arts, even wrestling. Say what you like about WWE, how fake it all is, how it's for children blah blah blah. That's not the point. I don't care who you are, being thrown off a ladder, being jumped on by someone, slammed onto your back from 6ft up hurts and will take the wind out of you whether the floor is padded or not. It's impressive athleticism, whether you watch the flexibility and agility of some of the smaller cruiserweights, or the sheer strength of the heavyweights. WWE wrestlers do a hell of a lot of work keeping in condition, and they do it 52 weeks a year. So I think an honourable mention there.

Rugby surely? They're constantly running in straight lines throughout the whole game.

For me, admittedly definitely not at the highest level, the most exhausting is definitely basketball.

Not exactly the most exhausting, but certainly the most painful: Japanese neon lamp fights.

Google it if you don't know what I'm talking about.
    ...

...I don't understand what I just saw. :nothing:

rowing -- you have to continue to train to ensure your body remains fit and healthy and the length of races can vary greatly

you've got the heads which are longer and are all about endurance and being able to pace yourself for the entire race and then there's regattas which are sprints and you need to give it everything over a distance which can vary from 300m to 2k and normally with regattas you have to race several times on the same day which is exceptionally tiring

I think there's a case for every sport tbh, its all subjective.

For example, I could say Rugby 7s. Full size pitch, 7 players, 14 minutes. As well as sprinting most of the time (it really is a game for speed), you have contact situations and continously tackling/rucking/mauling really takes it out of you. It may be a short duration but the intensity is ridiculous.

On the other hand, I could say marathon running, because of the duration and the mental strength it takes, despite being more of a medium intensity.

I would say any sport that involves a mixture of high intensity, long duration and gross muscle movement would be a contender for the most gruelling though. But either way, any sport at elite level is going to be physically demanding.

In terms of team sports, it has to be Ice Hockey. Guys go on the rink, skate as hard as possible for 2 minutes at a time, hit big, lose blood, lose teeth, sweat like pigs, rest for a minute and then do it all again. It's extremely physically demanding as it's so intense and fast paced, and the pros are built like tanks too.

Would have to agree with you there! the intensity of 7's is unbelievable! With players running flat out for 14 mins 4 times a day it is exhausting. Especially with the skills involved as well! Not just physically challenging but mentally as well!

It is difficult to make a decision on just one sport for this, but the intensity has to be high all the way throughout. Something like rowing as well at high level is ridiculous as well.

Every sport is becoming more and more competitive. Standards are being raised and records broken so I was wondering which one demands the most, physically. There are extremely intensive sports like Boxing or Rowing, where you're putting out 101% during the competition but this doesn't take into account how long/much you need to train, how much pain you have to take while you train and how long the actual competition lasts (this is where endurance sports dominate).

What is the ultimate soul-consuming physical sport in your opinion?
The 1 million mile run whilst pulling a truck and being punched in the kidneys by Lennox Lewis.
