Re: B448 - Rename the country Bill 2012
No. This seems like a pointless and nationalist Bill.
"To make our nation sound better on the world stage"
Seriously? The first thing that comes to mind is the Central African Republic briefly naming itself the Central African Empire for prestige reasons. Unsurprisingly, that was a complete faliure -
Re: B448 - Rename the country Bill 2012This.(Original post by davidmarsh01)
Lol, no. When I saw the title I thought it was going to be from barnetlad. -
Re: B448 - Rename the country Bill 2012We're not even called Great Britain, it's the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Britain is the name of the largest land mass on the UK.(Original post by Alofleicester)
So, Great Britain would just become Britannia? Seems fairly pointless a change.
How about we rename ourselves the Great Empire of Britannia? That'd "make us sound [even] better" as the bill put it. -
Re: B448 - Rename the country Bill 2012urgh, really? were called that? fml.(Original post by davidmarsh01)

just go back to England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland ffs, none of this imperial bull, and for the love of god, drop the word "great" from the name, I know a lot of people in this country are arrogant sods but do we really need to make it quite so obvious to the rest of the world? surely history gives them enough reason to despise us as is. -
Re: B448 - Rename the country Bill 2012Great Britain stands in contrast to Lesser Britain, which is Brittany in France, and often just gets shortened to Britain (it's not just a boast about how awesome Britain is, it refers to the fact Great Britain covers a greater area than lesser Britain!). Britain is not a country, but rather, the shorthand for the island which contains Scotland, England and Wales. It is the largest of the British Isles, the second largest theoretically being Ireland, although for political and social reasons calling Ireland one of the British Isles is not a good idea. The reason for that is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is often called Britain, which, while not strictly speaking correct, is still enough to put off the Republic of Ireland from wanting to be one of the British Isles as it does make them sound like our possession.(Original post by SciFiBoy)
I always get confuzzeled with these things, is Britain technically even a country? or are the constituent countries countries and the Britain thing is just some kind of imperial hangover?Last edited by TopHat; 11-05-2012 at 21:29. -

Re: B448 - Rename the country Bill 2012Ah right, once we get past Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland & England I tend to stop caring. It's somewhat of a trivial matter IMO, which is why I was also surprised this didn't come from barnetlad.(Original post by davidmarsh01)

It would, however we don't really have an Empire. I recommend Sassanachland as the new name. -

(especially all the pretentious stuff about "Her Britannic majesty...)?
Agreed, if we're going to stay as a united kingdom then we should just call ourselves the "United Kingdom of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland". Although I'd imagine that would get a lot of criticism from a lot of pompous, pretentious people. -
Re: B448 - Rename the country Bill 2012We could just call what we have currently an empire. Anything that would make us sound better, eh?(Original post by Alofleicester)

I hope Scotland get independence so we can call ourselves the Democratic Socialist People's Republic of Scotland. -
Re: B448 - Rename the country Bill 2012
A new age of imperialism is dawning and it our birthright as Englishmen to divide and conquer. We must kick start this new era by claiming a new name, a new national anthem and a new attitude. We alone have the iron will to dominate this new world, it is time to stop our inevitable decline and once again rise up to lead this new world. All hail Britannia!
