Anyone else doing AQA Physics B Unit 4/Unit 5 in June?

I like unit 5 much more and it's more fresh in the mind so I am mainly happy with it, however I will be making sure to go over as much of the book as possible over the weekend. There are always little bits that are easy to miss but come up (like the Jan12 paper had a question on rate of flow of water as part of a PWR question, which I had no clue how to answer but there's a tiny blue box in the book that links it to Q=MCdT).(Original post by oPJ_Lad)
Yea 1 was a breeze, couldn't believe they put that in tbh.
Endoscopy was nice, CCDs I couldn't get the marks, I only really talked about the variation in charge intensities and how filtering primary colours gives an overall image.
because I ran out of time, I didn't even bother reading the magnetic paragraph... thankfully I didn't! ha
Im meant to be an A* definite but after that I recon I got 65, which is cutting it short
Hoping for a good PHYB5 on monday, you pumped for it? I need to do a good prep this weekend, its morning as well... i quite like afternoon exams.
yes, the handwriting, but people with writing issues get away with good grades so they must be lenient with it (Eg, not 'we cant read it so we won't give you the mark').
Any idea of boundaries? A = 60 A* = 68 ??
I'm not sure how to guage the Phyb4 paper. I looked over past boundaries but there hasn't really been enough to get an accurate idea. The past three Januarys have been 73,72,74 and Junes 78, 66 chronologically since 2010 (I'm speaking in terms of 120UMS). I don't know if that 66 is anomalous, so June papers could have generally higher boundaries, but really that's impossible to determine.
Anyway, from the paper content compared to all the previous, I would say for me it would be slightly on the harder spectrum, but that's probably because it appeared to be more wordy and less Maths. I imagine performance on Q1 was generally excellent, and probably pretty decent on endoscopes, but from then on I wouldn't know how to call it - it was rather more thought provoking than usual I suppose? I'd imagine people faired pretty badly on centripetal force and not too great on gravitation. The magnetic section wasn't particularly taxing but there's a chance people got caught up on reading that horribly useless paragraph (one of my mates spent quite a few minutes bullet pointing the details from it before reading on...).
I'd really have to see the paper again 'cause I've forgotten loads of it. I do imagine I have lost ~20 marks throughout on various details (or lack of). Depending on Maths mistakes/wrong Maths (still not sure if I did centripetal thing right) It could be worse. I would really love 120 UMS, because that puts the pressure on unit 5 down to a 90UMS requirement for the A I need. Eh, idk, just going to hope for a peaceful paper on Monday that doesn't ask really unorthodox questions.

not to sure where you're getting these boundaries from. 73 has been the highest A* :L "AQA Physics B Unit 4 and 5" is what you want to be looking at. Its usually 63 for an A, and 70 for an A*. But can vary between 65-72 for the A*. the 72 was a easy paper, whereas PHYB4 wasn't, so maybe 67 for the A*. (A=120UMS)
I agree, the question with the track would've definitely thrown things.
Fair enough, i need barely nothing for the A, hence the A* would be really handy. And since I'm doing physics at uni... haha
what you doing at uni/ next year plans? -
I was talking in terms of 120 UMS. You usually need 75% of the marks to get 120.(Original post by oPJ_Lad)

Bristol firm for Electrical & Electronic Engineering , need AAB. You? -
Re: Anyone else doing AQA Physics B Unit 4/Unit 5 in June? Not really sure what you're meaning by it :L 75% of the marks is 75 marks (papers out of 100) ... and A*, which is 135UMS, has been 73 maximum... so for 120 UMS to be 75 I'm not too sure.(Original post by Dangerous Theory)

Oh well, just gotta do your best and worry about the marks on the 16th august.
Nice, I'm exeter for Physics, AAA. But always keen to get A*A*A or B - chemistry is ridiculous so I'm more likely to get a B there. A*AB is the same as aaa so I'm optimistic yet worried ... no idea what ill do if I don't get into exeter.
do you has insurance? -
Re: Anyone else doing AQA Physics B Unit 4/Unit 5 in June?****, 150UMS is chemistry F325 :L Lets get this right, you recon 78/100marks for 120/120UMS !? Eg you only need 78% for full UMS... thats very low?!(Original post by Dangerous Theory)
Are you sure you're doing PHYB5 by AQA lol? The maximum is 120 UMS, you can't get 135. 66-78 raw marks have been so far the requirement for 120 UMS.
My "insurance" is Bath but same grades

Yeah physics grade boundaries do seem incredibly low, but when it comes to the paper it isn't as easy as one might think. By the way, the raw mark to UMS converter on the AQA site shows you all the boundaries and what X raw marks equate to in UMS.

Re: Anyone else doing AQA Physics B Unit 4/Unit 5 in June?i agree. not too shabby. was hoping for a better 6 marker, i predicted a 6 marker on synchrotrons or mass spec (surprised no synchrotron radiation came up, thats pretty important in particle physics and still haven't noticed it in a past paper yet)(Original post by Dangerous Theory)
Not too shabby overall. Fusion questions and entropy were the worst

yea entropy and heat got me - still got an answer down.
Fusion took some thought, but a few confirmed at the end i got the density correct, which meant most or all of previous but me okay. But tbh, i had to do well in that, especially after PHYB4
Idea of grade boundaries for this one? Id say higher than paper 1. Overall: PHYB4 - A=62,A*=69 and PHYB5 - A=66,A*=73 Raw Mark
-
Don't know, I imagine quite average boundaries or perhaps slightly higher. Some of those questions will have been very difficult for some but others were very accessible. I quite liked the 6 mark tbh, also but whether I wrote enough I don't know. I've lost 15 to 20 marks for sure on some mistakes and things I couldn't really answer. Felt a bit it better than unit 4 but I didn't mind either. I need 210 UMS over these two exams, and average 105 each lol. Can only wait though.(Original post by oPJ_Lad)

Re: Anyone else doing AQA Physics B Unit 4/Unit 5 in June?I just hope i made it all up with this paper. With the 6 marker though, its the mark scheme where I'm worried, its so precise, especially with the nuclear stuff.(Original post by Dangerous Theory)

I even included some chemistry about optical isomers just to fill up the space :L
fairs, hope you get it!
