English to Greek (AS level)
Hi all... Just a few questions on English to Greek if someone could help...
How would you translate the sentence 'Do you know who wrote the best letter, teacher?'
I ended up getting something like ἀρ'ου γιγνωσκει ὁς την ἀριστην ἐπιστολην ἐγραψε, ὠ διδασκαλε but I'm not too sure if I'm even close with that...
Also, in the case of something like 'This woman asked whether I had seen the slave running away'
ἡδε γυνη ἠρωτησε εἰ εἰδον τον δουλον ἀποτροποντα - is that correct?
ThanksLast edited by thesaintx; 12-05-2012 at 14:46. -
Re: English to Greek (AS level)
For sentences like the first one I prefer to use participles but the relative pronoun is fine. It should also be γιγνωσκεις. Also the question isn't really 'loaded' to expect a yes answer so I would just go for ἀρα instead of ἀρ'ου. Remember to end questions with a semicolon.
I would change the second one so εἰδον is at the end, and it should be ἠρωτησεν since it's followed by a vowel. What verb is ἀποτροποντα from? I would have used ἀποτρεχοντα from ἀποτρεχω for run away
Aside from those everything looks ok, though others might come along and say otherwise. Good luck in your exam
