    Is this legal?
I'm sure a lot of people here will have already seen this photo before, but here it is anyways:

Now, it turns out that the cat wasn't actually painted/dyed, and the photo was edited. But it got me wondering - is it legal (morally agreeable or not) to do something like that to an animal? I can understand using chemical based dyes being bad, since the animal would lick itself and ingest them, but could this be done using natural ingredients?

I know of people who dye their animals on certain occasions for parades and such. So long as the dye used is non-toxic and edible, and I think it's perfectly legal.

It is legal, unless an animal officer witnesses the dying of the animal and the animal is noticeably in distress. Then it is deemed cruelty and the person is given a warning. If dying continues and the animal continues to stress over it, the officer can take the animal away and the person would likely receive a fine.
But it's never happened, so far as I'm aware.

People sometimes inject chicken eggs with non-toxic dye during the incubating process, so that the chicks hatch that colour. It's entirely legal, and they lose the blue / green / pink / whatever colour as soon as they grow normal feathers.

    It's hilarious.

I think it depends on the animals temperament really, if the dog is happy with being groomed, clipped, bathed etc then doing stuff like this isn't really that different. Who says we shouldn't make jokes of them, they don't experience the emotion of humiliation and so it's not doing them any harm.

It is only stupid if you do it not following the dyes instructions. vegetable based and vegan friendly dyes are often the best both results and health wise.
animals do not neccesarily realise they are a different colour.
animals which stress easily or do not like to be kept still are not suited to being dyed.

I have literally TODAY dyed my dog a union jack mowhawk and ears in celebration of the Queens Diamond Jubilee. Cant wait for people to tell me I'm cruel... yet they knowingly dye their own hair with peroxides and other dangerous chemicals. I dyed the tips of his ears to see if he was sensitive to it.. the next day did just his ears, then today shaved him and dyed the hawk.

He is the same old crazy fool.... no different. no skin flares nothing. as long as you do not harm your animal, the majority have no qualms. Mine has been brought up to be groomed and he doesnt mind.. he got marmite biscuits out of it after all!!!

I think it's illegal if you use like hair dye, but food colourings would be ok.

It's a fair point. Not perfectly phrased, but fair. It is legal and not immoral because the animals aren't aware and it doesn't bother them.

my take on the thread was whether using dyes on animals is cruel and therefore illegal. and are there products which can dye a pet but not be harmful. so in my mind my reply giving personal experience with dyeing a pet, and which dyes i used and how it is not cruel to an animal if used correctly is valid. im sorry if i am not identical to yourself and see things the same way

If you disagree with 'creative grooming' simply because it causes pain and discomfort to the animal for our enjoyment, then you have to apply the same argument to topics like farming, animal testing and zoos where animals are inconvenienced for our benefit. Similarly, you need to consider whether it's okay to parade children caked in make-up in beauty pageants when they might not necessarily enjoy it and are too young to fully give consent.

I'm raising points here, not putting forward my opinion on using dyes on animals, which is "it's okay as long as the animal doesn't suffer as a result".
