Is it right that, in a divorce, women usually keep the house and other valuables?
Well,
When couples divorce, is it right that the woman usually keeps the house and other valuables, even if she has never worked during the relationship?
I think it's 100% sexist and wrong and that everything should be split 50/50. -

OP have you been reading the Daily Mail again ?
Just someone I know is getting divorced and his selfish lazy stupid wife is getting everything, including the 340,000 pound house. Boils my blood. -
Re: Is it right that, in a divorce, women usually keep the house and other valuables?Sell house, split proceeds.(Original post by WelshBluebird)
Any evidence that this actually happens?
(also, a pretty obvious point, but you can't split the house 50:50). -

Re: Is it right that, in a divorce, women usually keep the house and other valuables? So you are basing your opinions based on one case? (a case where you are presumably quite biased in as it is his you know, not his wife).(Original post by justmyopinions)
No :L

You can sell it and split the money.Ignoring all consequences? (such as kids being in good schools etc).(Original post by Blazara)
Sell house, split proceeds.
And if it doesn't sell? (last I checked the housing market wasn't exactly brilliant for sellers thanks to the recession and such). -
Re: Is it right that, in a divorce, women usually keep the house and other valuables?
i thought that was just a stereotype from watching too many shows that involved it e.g. two and a half men...
if such a thing is real, R.I.P to the man and any fairness that should have existed...
you can get a prenup before marriage which will lessen the blow though i heard from another poster a long time ago that this isnt really taken seriously, so i dont know...
need to get a good lawyer if its true i suppose ...
regarding what id do, id try and make it as fair as possible (obviously i dont plan on getting a divorce...just a precaution...)Last edited by Dmon1Unlimited; 12-05-2012 at 22:26. -
Re: Is it right that, in a divorce, women usually keep the house and other valuables?Of course.(Original post by Notwithstanding)
Although absolutely I think the law should be that whoever bought it, owns it, whatever it is. It's strange that anyone is entitled to something simply because someone they were married to bought it.
The real issue though comes when both parties have bought it (both have contributed towards the payments).
And indeed, it many cases that can be difficult to prove how much comes from either party.
I think people have to remember that divorces can be very messy, and it is not easy sorting it all out. Dividing up everything is difficult, so it hardly ever will be perfect.Last edited by WelshBluebird; 12-05-2012 at 22:25. -
Re: Is it right that, in a divorce, women usually keep the house and other valuables?Usually the man lets the wife keep the house because she is raising his children and he doesn't want to see them on the street.(Original post by justmyopinions)

Obviously this is not always the case, but it's very common. -
Re: Is it right that, in a divorce, women usually keep the house and other valuables?Exactly the same, signing a pre-nup is effectively diminishing the value of marriage, though the concept isn't bad, it's not something I could do on principle. I want to commit to my future wife...(Original post by Notwithstanding)
There's something very unsettling about the notion of a prenup. The pragmatist in me kind of agrees with the idea but I don't think it's something I could ever do, simply because of what it represents.

Re: Is it right that, in a divorce, women usually keep the house and other valuables?Your mind is set back 20 years a go. In a LOT of cases, the man and the women contribute the same financially, and there are cases where the women is the sole/higher earner in the house.(Original post by the man from space)
Well, in most cases, the man has a higher paying job and therefore is able to sustain himself better
but still i think the whole process if wrong and pre-nups are the unfortunate future
And no I don't think it is right. It should be kept 50:50 obviously, but also it depends on other factors. Sometimes the house could be put in another family members name, to prevent the husband/wife getting hold of the house in case of divorce.
