How long does it take to settle into an accountancy training contract?
I've started a training contract and after two weeks into it I am finding the work hard and tough to get my head around. I am from a non relevant degree background. Is this normal? Will I grow into it with time? I am really doing accounatncy due to a lack of other options.

Give it time, hopefully you'll begin to understand it.

Whether you are doing it due to lack of other options is impossible to say. Only you know that. Surely you only applied for an accountancy job if you wanted to do it though?

I'm with M1011 on this, give it a bit more time. You've got to remember that 2 weeks is a ridiculously short time to get used to working somewhere, especially if it's in a subject or area where you have no prior experience. You say your degree is from a non-relevant subject so think about it like this - how long would you expect it to take an accounting graduate to get the hang of your degree subject? At the moment everything is new for you and you're also settling into the work environment of the office you're working at, that's a lot of quite big changes so yes, I'd say it probably is normal to take some time settling in.

As for whether you'll grow into it, nobody can answer that for you. We don't know you and your strengths/weaknesses well enough to say if accountancy is something you'll enjoy or not. Surely there was something that made you think an accountancy grad scheme would suit you before you applied for it?

If you're finding it tough to settle in and the work is making no sense to you then speak to the other people in your office and the other grads who started with you, you may find that they're feeling exactly the same. There will be support networks in place to help with the first few months. I don't see that you have anything much to lose if you just give yourself a little longer to get the hang of what's being asked of you.

Yeh, a lot of people find it tough from a long relevant degree, what degree did you do?

I am at a Big4 and also fell into accountancy because I couldn't get on to any other graduate schemes and didn't really have any options after uni (non accounting arts degree.)

I found it really hard to settle in too, particularly with the insurmountable workload, but you do eventually adjust. Two weeks is definitely not enough time to tell yet, I guess you won't even have taken any exams yet? They are tough but its a big confidence boost when you take the first few and can start ticking things off on your way to qualification.

It will all be worth it in the end, so I am told.

What other schemes were you looking at? Surprised to see you found big 4 easy in comparison to others, in my experience it was the exact opposite (although granted if you were looking at banks or something that's tougher).

I applied for literally anything and everything. I pretty much just took the Times Top 100 Employers and a few others I liked the look of and applied to as many as I could. I think that's what a lot of people seem to end up having to do these days!

NB. I didn't say it was easy, the interviews were pretty tough... just that they randomly seemed to like me whereas other interviewers of a similar level didn't.

It's tough..it really is. I am finding it hard and everyday requires 100% concentration. A lot of people I work with seem miserable. They never take breaks and come in early and leave really late. I'm not looking forward to going to classes on Friday nights and Saturday mornings come October in addition to all the hard work.

While this all sounds awful I really do not have much alternative. There really are no other jobs out there for people with degrees like me in arts subjects. I can't see myself doing this long term but I'm sure the experience I get will be better than that if I was a sales assistant.

Stick with it and when you pass you exams, move into something you would enjoy. Once you are qualified there will be a plethora of opportunities available to you which are much more exciting. Audit is sh*te, everybody knows that - especially the auditors. Managers hate you, clients really hate you. Not fun place to be.

Look at it as a means to an end, given the amount of exams you take and the way you are treated, it is more like school than work - so treat it as such.

Trust me, it is worth it in the end. Everybody in my group felt they way you do now. Dont worry.

What sort of jobs do people move into when they passed their exams? Did anybody drop out and if so what did they go into?

There are lots of options, probably the most likely for you would be to work in industry, basically working as a accountant inside a company.
