HELP! WJEC GCE AS English Literature Exam Help?!
Hi, I've got an AS English Literature exam on May 16th. (WJEC).
It's open book and i'm studying:
Kindertransport (play) by Diane Samuels
Selected Poems by Carol Ann Duffy
Selected Poems by Sheenagh Pugh.
For the first part of the exam, i think i'm asked a question on the Kindertransport and i think have to find 8 points relating to the question...some have to be from a specific section of the play and others from somewhere else of my choice. How do i allocate the points i make? Is it like 6 from the section they say and 2 from my chosen section?
I'm totally stuck on the second part of the exam! I have to link in 2 Carol Ann Duffy poems with 1 Sheenagh Pugh poem on a particular topic. How do i set it out? How do they want me to answer the question?! Do i talk about the 3 poems completely separately? Please help!! I don't know what they want. I don't have another english lesson before my exam so i can't ask. -
Re: HELP! WJEC GCE AS English Literature Exam Help?!
Hey I'm also doing the exam but i think you haven't been told about the A0's...
section Aa is AO2 which is form, structure, language, narrative, imagery and place.
section Ab is AO3 and 4 which is arguing different perspectives and the historical context(you dont hae to do AO4 if you cant think of anything to write!!)
section B is AO 1, 2 and 3 and tends to be about openings, endings, motifs, conflict.
I would help you some more but i'm not doing the same texts and you need to understand the AO's as they get you marks. I've already done this exam and failed because i didnt do these.
Hope this helps -

How do i set out the poetry answer? Like normally there's a set structure to follow so you remember to do everything...(Original post by WhoYouAre)

Re: HELP! WJEC GCE AS English Literature Exam Help?!Sorry it's late but thought I'd answer in case people are doing it next year- I've just resat it today.(Original post by WhoYouAre)
yeah something like that just remember to explain the effect the AO2 has.
Poetry
Begin with introduction e.g. "Throughout (the collection title), (the poet) presents the theme (insert theme here) generally as (point about how the poet presents the theme). (Partner poet), on the other hand, presents this theme in this way."
Para 1- In (first poem), the poem present the theme as ... . (give an overview of what the poem is about). A critic said (quote). This is particularly evident in the (technique i.e. simile/metaphor/ noun phrase) "insert quote", which may suggest (explain meaning). Alternatively, this may imply (suggest other possible meaning).
Para 2- Similar to paragraph 1 with different point.
Para 3- Summarise what has been said in paragraphs 1 and 2, then compare this to the partner poet i.e. "Overall, Larkin presents relationships in a very negative way in this poem. In Abse's poetry, however, they are presented in a significantly more positive way. For example, Abse uses the simile (example) in (poem) which seems to symbolise how fresh and new the relationship is.
Paras 4 and 5- same as 1 and 2 but with different poem.
Para 6- same as 3 but with different poems.
Paras 7 and 8- same as 1 and 2 but with either first core poem or second core poem.
Conclusion- Critically speaking, the core poet presents the theme is this way, whereas the partner poet presents it in this way.
Drama is the same but substitute the partner text and critic for points about context
Good luck guys!
