"Plus size models"
Yet again fashion magazines and skinny models are in the news and getting a rap on the knuckles for "encouraging eating disorders".... *eye roll*.
However, I've been seeing more and more... average sized girls, in magazines. Girls that are 14's and 16's. Although I still haven't seen a good model who is an 8 or 10 or even a slim 12 (obviously those sizes don't exist in fashion land.)
So I Googled "plus size models" and came up with some girls that... well, aren't plus size. They're normal kind of 12 and 14 sizes.
I'm curious as to other people's views on branding girls who are 12's and 14's as "plus size".
So, if you have any comments on the "plus size" models, I'd love to hear them, and also if you have any pictures of plus size models that you like (the pictures, the clothes or the model) please include a link.
Also, if you have a picture of a plus size model and you'd like to comment on it (maybe you think she's too overweight to be a healthy sized model, or you think she's too slim to be a "plus size" model) please include them.
The girl on the left is an 8.
The middle girl is a 12.
The far right girl is a 14.
This one here is the "spark" of this trail of thoughts. -
Re: "Plus size models"
To me, plus size is definitely 18+. Even size 16 girls can look "normal". It completely depends on the shape, height of the girl etc. I like to see 'normal' women because I think, well if she looks that good in that item of clothing then I can too. I don't get the same feeling when I see size 6/8s.

Re: "Plus size models"I totally agree, but I do like a girl who is a 10/12, because she looks nice, the clothes flatter and I know that I'll fit happily into what she's wearing.(Original post by inksplodge)

I was shocked that a 10 is a "plus size"... -
Re: "Plus size models"
Pfft.
It's in the name.. 'Model'.
A model is generally speaking no larger than a 10, so a plus size model is going to start at lower than maybe what you consider chubby to be. Personally, 14 is plus size from my standpoint. There are few girls who are a size 14 due to actual bodyshape or muscle, at 14 the majority of girls are a 14 because they are carrying more weight than is ideal. Just as the same is true of men who wear a large, and a large proportion of young men who wear a medium. If it's not due to height or muscle, they are too weighty.
Personally I think 'average' models should be around an 8-10, maybe a 12. But just as we shouldn't be encouraging models that are too skinny, we shouldn't be encouraging models that are too weighty, because our society is already on the road to an obesity epedmic.
Fact is, if you don't like falling high of the 'average' mark, that's you own damn fault probably. You shouldn't try and drag the average up, you should aspire to get down to it.
And this is coming from a formerly fat guy, so don't tell me I don't know

Re: "Plus size models"
Not my personal opinion but maybe they consider them plus size because most models are size 8? Therefore anything above that is deemed as plus....but I think that's a bit ridiculous to be honest, since the average size for girls is like 12-14. It's just in the model world size 8 is average, but not all of us are involved in that obviously so that's why it's a bit odd. I think plus sizes should be like 16 and over.
But that's strange though, on many sites I go on plus size is like 16+. Never seen people that are sizes 12 and 14 to be plus sized. -
Re: "Plus size models"Well, you're right, a lot of people it is well within their power. However you do have a lot of people who would look really awful at an 8 or a 10 as that, on their body type, would look too thin.(Original post by Steevee)

I, as someone who is a 10-12, and unlikely to get down much more due to the wonderful "womanly assets" I was "blessed" with, feel that calling a 10 or a 12 a "plus size" is sad. Considering few normal women are ever going to get to a 0, 2, 4, 6 or even 8 it seems stupid that anything humanly reachable is a "plus size." -
Re: "Plus size models"
I thought plus size was a 12+ in the USA, so a 16+ here? Thought that was the standard definition and is one I tended to agree with, (maybe 18+ though..)
And it might just be their body shape/toning, but the girl who's a 14 in your picture looks SO much bigger than the other two, despite only a one size difference. -
Re: "Plus size models"Not a 10, maybe a 12, crtainly a 14.(Original post by Poppy-Fields)

Also, not to be a douche or anything, but I know an absoloute ton of girls my age who are size 6,8 or 10. It's called an average for a reason.
And again, the clue is in the name, 'model'. You don't see any male models without defined muscles, most have amazing 6 packs and huge pecs that are totally out of the bounds of possibility for a normal guy who doesn't have the money and time to be at the gym an hour a day, 5 times a week with money for supplements. You don't hear us complaining about how there are no 'realistic' models out there. I honestly don't get the problem. Guys don't expect women to be models, it's almost like you girls are putting this pressure on yourselves

Re: "Plus size models"
A 12 is 'plus size'?!?! O_o
I'm a 12 and I don't mean to be boastfull/ vain/ big headed but I am not plus size! If anything, I try to GAIN weight. :O
Most (not all) models are all 6ft and size 2, so it's just not realistic.
I LOVE normal models, and plus size cause it is realistic.
Quick question: Anyone know of a site that tells you what size the model is wearing? (If any exist?)
-
Re: "Plus size models"I know some clothing sites will occasionally tell you the size the model is wearing and how tall she is "New Look" and "Topshop" do this, I think "H&M" do on *some* of their models. But no, not all.(Original post by Little Miss Crazy)

Personally I think you should have to, by law, display the size and height of the model. -
Re: "Plus size models"She does look slim, but I think height is deceiving. At 5ft 10, even though i'm a decent sized 10, i sometimes even buy size 12, i still look 'skinny', and more of an 8. She does have bigger legs, in proportion to her stomach, which makes me wonder if either her legs are photoshopped so they look bigger, or they have flattened her stomach. Either way, I think she could be a 14, she may just carry it well due to height.

Re: "Plus size models"Thank you! And I agree, it would help a lot, to put the model/ clothes into proportion.(Original post by Poppy-Fields)

That must mean that I'm plus sized... I try to gain weight cause my ribs stick out (just like the models), but the rest of my body is just like hers.
But, compared to my friends, I'm pretty skinny. But I'm 5ft 11, so I guess I can carry it off. Either way, I don't belive it should be classed as 'pus size.' ): -
Re: "Plus size models"A 14?! You've got to be kidding that girl is most likely to be a 10 at MOST. Her legs are definitely not big and she is no way shape or form a plus size model.(Original post by Polly1101)

Yes, she comes up on a search for plus size models and she's signed to a plus size agency.
