Re: Year Abroad 2012/13 Chat Thread
Hi
I should be going on Erasmus to Finland. If my department actually help me with choosing which modules I can/can't do. Which they don't seem to want to do
I'm undecided on how long to go for (at least six months? ahh, I don't know), but I only have a week until I need to send the application off so decisions will likely be made quickly, gah.

Re: Year Abroad 2011/2012 chat threadcould i possibly ask how you're paying for it?(Original post by GooseNation)
I'm going to Maryland, USA. I leave on the 19th August, which regrettably feels like an age away right now!
i really want to go for a year but no idea how to fund it! -
Re: Year Abroad 2011/2012 chat threadSounds good. I've chosen to study some urban planning and transport geography modules which I am really excited about as it is the sector I'm hoping to work in after graduating. Also my home university doesn't offer those kind of modules so it was one of the main reasons why I wanted to study abroad in the first place.(Original post by greeneyedgirl)
English Language...well Linguistics really so for me I'm really excited to get analysing Canadian English, also if I'm lucky with my course choices I'll get to study Blackfoot (the Native Indian language from my area!)
I plan on visiting somewhere inside the Arctic circle before I'm thirty (maybe not the North American Arctic as it's more expensive to get there, more likely northern Scandinavia). Even if I don't get to see the northern lights I'd still be very happy to have experienced the Arctic.I think most people would kill to see the Northern Lights, it's been on my bucket list for ages!
Tempted to get this: http://www.iwantoneofthose.com/gift-.../30000539.html and see how much I can scratch off next year
Yes that is a good idea!
I've been looking at the plane tickets to Hong Kong and it seems I can get a one way ticket from around £500. Still very expensive but when I checked earlier in the year I found prices to be around the £1000 mark! Although that was British Airways! How much does it cost to get to Calgary? Also when are you going to purchase a ticket? I don't want to wait too long and have to pay more money. -

Yeah I'd love to visit Scandinavian Arctic
Should be about £600 return for me which isn't too bad I guess! I think I'm going to buy tickets mid-June which will be when I get my exam results therefore confirmation I've got into year abroad...just in case

I'd recommend you go for a year - you'll arrive in August when it's actually sunny/there is light and you can see grass, then you'll have the long winter and dark... then finally, you'll get to the other and there will be light again. On my Erasmus year the people who only did one semester (particularly those who arrived in Jan) struggled as they didn't know it could get better than dark or snow for five months, which was pretty depressing I think. I really liked doing the whole year as you experienced the entire year of seasons and that's a massive part of living in Finland as the seasons/weather rule your life in a much bigger way than it does in the UK. On another note, I also know that people who didn't go for an entire year struggled more because around 60-70% of people do go for the entire year. Those who were only there in semester one had to go home to see everyone else still having an amazing time on facebook and they knew what they were missing and those who came in semester two only really made friends with the other new people as the people who had been there since August already had solid friendship groups and had got over the whole "omg its dark ALL of the time" thing which was the main topic of conversation for the new people!
Also, if you go for a year you'll get your tuition fees paid by the EU whereas if you only go for a semester you'll have to pay half fees. -
Re: Year Abroad 2012/13 Chat Thread
Hi guys, I'm from Edinburgh Uni, and I'm off to University of North Carolina in, surprisingly, North Carolina USA
Going to be there for a whole year. I'm actually working at a summer camp in NJ (for my third summer there) so I'm heading over in a couple of weeks - going to be a long time away from home!

Re: Year Abroad 2012/13 Chat Thread
I'm headed to Uppsala, Sweden (I attend Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario Canada).
Good luck to everyone heading over to Canada, only thing I will warn you about is that in Canada everything is REALLY far away from each other. Weekend trips would be pretty hard unless you're in Ontario or Southern Quebec.
Also be prepared to say sorry.. a lot

Re: Year Abroad 2011/2012 chat threadI'm quite lucky, really. It's part of my degree so it's done as an exchange. So the tuition is paid to my university here, and is only half of the normal amount (so like, £1600ish). I still get my student loan (actually get a bit more for being abroad) and SFE also give you a travel grant to claim back on certain expenses. I have saved as well and my parents will be helping me out, but it's not as expensive as you might think!(Original post by foodnom)

I know things are pretty far away but from what I've heard of others who've gone to calgary the international office organises quite a few trips, and plus places like banff and lake louise are just an hour and a half away. Although the bigger trips (Vancouver, Toronto and bits of the state) I'm going to save till May when exams are done!
Why sorry? -

I feel like it would kind of be a bit pointless to go for less than a year, but then one of the main reasons I chose to come to this university is because of reeeally interesting module in the second year, which I'd miss out on. I'm more inclined to say that I'll go for a year, and then if I really don't like it come home, rather than really love it and not be able to extend how long I'm there.
Did you learn some Swedish/Finnish? I've spent the past year learning Arabic so I figured that a difficult language was a non-issue, but Finnish just looks a bit like
I didn't know that about the fees though, thanks

Might not be true for everywhere but definitely holds true in both my hometown and Kingston.

Re: Year Abroad 2012/13 Chat Thread
Hey all! I'm (hopefully) going to Sweden, Vaxjo in September for a full year. I say hopefully because I still haven't got my confirmation e-mail and next to no one has been refused from their chosen universities so fingers crossed! It's going to be my third year and then I'll come back to finish my degree the year after.
I feel so lost with all this study abroad, I've searched the student room and Google but I can't seem to find anyone who's studying where I am! Any ideas?
I also have another question, I was told by the Erasmus leader at my Uni that I was eligible for a maintenance loan but I filled in my student finance and all it gives me is tuition fee loans. Forgive me if I'm being a complete idiot but I didn't think you had to pay tuition fees on the third year? And where is my maintenance lol?! I put a year for study abroad and I require no additional help due to being disabled. I really hate directgov sites... -

Re: Year Abroad 2012/13 Chat ThreadWow very nice(Original post by Pi!)
I know someone doing a semester in San Fransisco, I'm so jelly.
I left Glasgow today to come back home, and now I'm home it's very odd thinking that (excluding holiday to Spain etc.) the next place I'll be going is Calgary... -
Re: Year Abroad 2012/13 Chat ThreadYou will be eligible for whatever you are normally eligible for in the UK, so any maintenance loans/grants. You don't need a tuition fees loan as you won't be paying any (assuming you have an Erasmus funded place) and you will be sent additional information by your home university about the Erasmus grants as these are administered by your home university. You will be given this money in 3 instalments during the academic year and it is in addition to everything you receive from student finance.(Original post by Bradster)
