Re: What is the difference between British society and the rest of Europe?I'd rather live in Germany at times to be honest.(Original post by MagicNMedicine)
Britain is more open, tolerant and liberal and is the best place to live in Europe. -
Re: What is the difference between British society and the rest of Europe?Nonsense. The Netherlands is far more progressive than Britain and far more cosmopolitan. Germany is way more industrious and has a unique symbiosis of socialism and capitalism that seems to work. Denmark, like most Scandinavian countries, is obsessed with egalitarianism. For better and for worse, Britain has none of these characteristics. These are only broad, single statements too. I could go on and on about how different these countries are to both Britain and to each other (although they are more similar to each other than they are Britain).(Original post by Snagprophet)
If you look at the other Germanic nations, you'll see England is very similar to them, such as the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark.
The only way that they are similar is that they all speak Germanic languages (all specifically West Germanic with the exception of Danish which is North Germanic) and have some degree of genetic similarity (again, the continentals are more similar to one another than they are to the British). They are also all predominantly Protestant.
It's not quite like the difference between Japanese society and Tanzanian society but its profound enough. -
Re: What is the difference between British society and the rest of Europe? It's definitely not more open. Walk down a street in France or Spain and you'll see 2 of 3 porn shops.(Original post by MagicNMedicine)

We don't fall foul to Fascism and Communism. And we kick ass, and we know how to binge drink properly. -
Re: What is the difference between British society and the rest of Europe?Obviously not today, Good grief.(Original post by No Man)
Give me 3 Fascist/Communist states in mainland Europe.
Although it would not surprise me in the slightest if they started to emerge if the Euro crises really does go well and truly tits up, the Europeans will show their true colours again

Re: What is the difference between British society and the rest of Europe?and Britons are the only people in Europe who don't realise this(Original post by dgeorge)
As pointed out above, "the rest of Europe" is NOT a homogeneous block. Therefore no proper comparison can take place -

Re: What is the difference between British society and the rest of Europe? The far right are much more mainstream in most european countries, espeicially in eastern europe, but to be more relavent, far-right parties are often the 3rd biggest party, and some the 2nd biggest, though they are more like UKIP.(Original post by MagicNMedicine)
