Re: Cooking for a northerner!!
Depends on your cooking ability really.
I've fallen in love with Scotch pies..OMG peppery goodness but not many people make hot water crust pastry and I couldn't be arsed for a big group meal...
Shepherd's pie
Cottage pie
Cumberland pie
Lancashire Hot Pot
Beef Stew
Steak and Kidney Pie
Steak and Kidney Pudding
Chicken Tikka Masala curry
Madras Curry
Homemade battered fish, chips, mushy peas & tartare sauce
Roast + trimmings
Corned Beef Hash
Toad in the hole
I pretty much lived on this (I'm a Londoner) and so did my bf before I started messing about with cooking. My Mum's tastes are pretty stubborn and she only really likes this sorta stuff and take aways which is lame but you can jazz it up with using a richer stock/bay leaves/chilli/rosemary & thyme roasties etc just to expand his tastes a little.

Re: Cooking for a northerner!!You're talking to me like I'm the OP. I'm from the North and also hate mushrooms and I wouldn't class that as fussy at all(Original post by Raiden10)
Depending upon exactly how much and what they won't eat, not being from the North shouldn't be an obstacle to calling these people fussy eaters.
It's a bit pathetic that one is expected to be "understanding" because "they're from the north".
Perhaps you could work on his fussy eating rather than simply bend to his will.
For the record I can't find fault with his not liking mushrooms. I hate them.

Re: Cooking for a northerner!!
My mother-in-law is just the same. She's Yorkshire through-and-through and she's SOOO fussy when it comes to food. Won't even eat pasta!
She likes :
corned beef hash and pancakes
Sunday dinner type of meals (either with beef or chicken) - yorkshire puds, potatoes, veggies, gravy
stew and dumplings
bacon sandwiches
fish and chips
prawn cocktail
beef/chicken and stuffing sandwiches
It's gotta be really traditional sort of food or she won't touch it. ANYTHING that she doesn't consider to be "English enough" is a no no. She's never tasted curry in her life. She won't touch pizza.
She's the perfect candidate to take to a carvery for a meal, but very little other places! -
Re: Cooking for a northerner!!doesn't matter what it is, just drench it in gravy(Original post by Charleyyy!)
Urgh, so I absolutely love cooking and I've recently started seeing this guy who has a proper 'northern' attitude to food... he's proper fussy and basically just loves really simple, plain roast dinners, and chip spice. I don't know if this is because he's never really tried much other food or if he genuinely doesn't like a lot of things.
Anyway, I'm racking my brains to think of some semi-simple, everyday meals I can cook for him without going out of my mind with boredom eating meat and two veg every day. He hates cheese, and he hates mushrooms and my mind is pretty much blank about what I can prepare (cos now pasta bakes etc are off the menu).
Any suggestions would be greatly received! -
