Re: Insomniacs - how do you survive?
Promethazine/Doxylamine (both OTC sleep meds, not both at once, I tend to alternate) or quetiapine if I'm really bad and really need to sleep (prescription antipsychotic, not an OTC med).
Tried melatonin but no luck there, probably not surprising as my insomnia is hypomania/bipolar cycling related. -
Re: Insomniacs - how do you survive?
For me, the lack of sleep turned out to be enirely phsychological. I would lie for hours on end worrying about things and the amount of sleep I would get. Because I kept worrying I never did get any sleep. It was hard to break out of, but moving to uni and into loud halls helped. I learnt to deal with noise, and I'd exercise just before bed. I still do struggle, but now I try to clear my thoughts and breathe deeply.
Have you considered that it could be psychological? -
Re: Insomniacs - how do you survive?
Most prescription sedatives are addictive so you'll probably find that your doctor will only prescribe you seven or so. Taken in the long run, they can be dangerous and the idea is just to get your sleeping pattern back on track.
If you are going to the GP, you need to make it clear that this problem has been going on for months. S/he needs to understand how much this is affecting you. Trust me, I've been there and it's irritating as hell.
Good luck. -

Went to the doc this morning and did make it clear. Actually had to write it down as my head is such a scramble it would have been pointless to try and get it all out in speech. She has prescribed me some and was like you very cautious about taking them for any longer than needed - recommended 3 nights, then see how I was without them. Like you said really - not to become reliant, just use them to get sleep pattern back in check.
Even at this horrific hour I'm still not convinced lol so got some less strong OTC pills (not Nytol, Kalms) to perhaps take first. I'll make a decision tonight. Can't see me having a miracle cure by then so it'll either be prescribed pills or OTC pills
Hmm
