Using a 'stage name' in everyday life?
    Hi

I use a sort of 'stage name' sometimes as an escape from general anxiety, originally it was as a stage name when I auditioned for performance poetry, but I wonder if it is appropriate/adviseable to use it in other situations as well, such as the seminars or the dentist or...?

I find that it's like a coping mechanism, that I'm more confident if I'm someone that's not my usual anxious self...if that makes sense...

They had this on 'The Hoarder Next Door', a guy sometimes dressed up as a woman and used a woman's name to adopt a more confident persona and escape his usual anxiety.

Might be a bit extreme to pretend you're a woman at the dentist's though

It isn't a ridiculous name or anything... I guess I don't really mean 'stage name', it's just a normalish name that's different from my original name

I know plenty of people who go by normal names that aren't their legal names.

In fact I don't actually know most of their real names or even if they're using their real or other name. I just know that it's very widespread in the village.

You mean a pseudonym? Nothing wrong with it, though depending on where/when you use it may be wise to check the legalities.

Nothing wrong with it, a name's just a name - some label to use to refer to you as. You can have a chosen name and your 'legal name', only using the legal name for important things like bank accounts, government forms, etc. I suppose the only real difficulty is if you build relationships with people using your pseudonym and then they come to find out your real name.

Myself, I use a psuedonym for blogging so I can write more-or-less anonymously, though haven't ever used it in person with anyone.

Lots of my friends have a sort of 'stage name', well it's a nickname, but guess that's the same sort of thing? It is a name different to your birth name?

There's a girl at my sixth form (16/17 y/o) whose real name is Sarah but she calls herself Storm. I know people that didn't even know Sarah was her real name!

Is your 'stage name' like a nicname derived from your real name, or just a made up name?

Alix isn't my real name but I use it everywhere I can. Unfortunetly not at school, as people have known me for too long, but I'm changing schools in a year then I'll get everyone to call me it.

I use my pen name sometimes, though nothing involving appointments, etc. I simply introduce myself as said name when meeting new people, or if I'm away from home.

I know people who use their middle name instead but if someone said they were using a name they'd just conpletely made up themselves id think it was a bit odd. Each to their own although I don't know if it's okay to use it in a seminar as a lecture or whoever might be aware of your real name ( from the register etc) and they might ask you about it which would probably be awkward. And as for using it at the dentist,if it's a confidence thing why do you need to use it at a dentist?!Plus it's a bit strange to register yourself at a dentist with a made up name?Kinda like you're trying to lead a double life!
