i pasted Brian into a new layer and then used the magic wand to remove the background
ctrl T to resize
..and a soft eraser brush to blend him in a bit
also adjusted the lighting using Image>adjustments>brightness/contrast and then colour balance..

EDIT:
also the polygonal lasso tool is good for cropping stuff out if its not solidly coloured
