Re: What makes football fans so dedicated/bothered?But in reality, there are very, very few football fans who are actually like that.(Original post by crocker710)
Well I didn't know I was opening up myself up to personal attack.
I didn't say anyone successful doesn't enjoy football, I said they're unlikely to be the ones with the 25stone+ beer belly screaming, topless, whilst sobbing uncontrollably because their team moved from the 3rd tier of english football to the 4th. -
Re: What makes football fans so dedicated/bothered?Then you would think if anything it would be a woman's sport, since we are supposed to be the ones who are hormonal and cry when watching TV. I have a friend who started getting hormonal she would cry when watching TV etc her gp said it was pre menstrual tension and put her on medication ffs.(Original post by Zyyz)
Because it's on every week from august to may, it's mainstream, it's dramatic, it's exhilarating, it's painful, it's joyful. And most of all, it's a mans sport so please just ignore it and brush up on your cooking skills please, in the kitchen. -

It comes from the era before the 1950's when people didn't move around as much. The local football team is a very tangible symbol of local pride, local rivalry. For example, the cities of Liverpool and Manchester, Portsmouth and Southampton etc have always been rivals for economic reasons. However, boasting that your city has made more money than the other city isn't very visceral. The football team is a more immediate satisfaction of the tribal desire to be part of a group and to challenge your rivals. Support for a team is usually passed down the generations, though in the globalised era more people of every class have chosen to be glory hunters. Football and rugby are the only sports in Britain where teams are based around their city. That's why things like tennis, snooker or touring car racing aren't as compelling or popular. If you want a girly analogy, supporting a football team is a bit like being married. You love them with an inexpressible love, but spend most of your time rolling your eyes at their ineptitude and moaning about them to your friends. It's all worth it though for the romantic moment when your team lifts the Johnstone's Paint trophy or gets promoted to the heady heights of League One.
Ok thankyou, that makes more sense
So what you see at a football stadium is basically the inner animal instinct in men...the instinct to herd and be part of a group.

Re: What makes football fans so dedicated/bothered?I know but she was put on medication, Id like to support a football team but I cant keep up with it all.(Original post by Zyyz)

Re: What makes football fans so dedicated/bothered?Maybe not, it might be education thats deluding us all and taking away our natural instincts.(Original post by bluenose14)
Ive been indoctrinated by my family in all honestly. Wouldn't have it any other way though.
It's just common ground with a lot of people as well I suppose. And there's definitely something tribal about it. Deep down I know it's stupid though. -
Re: What makes football fans so dedicated/bothered?
it's difficult to explain it.
If you took a step back and looked at it, I understand why people that don't follow/like football may think it is stupid but when your team scores a 90th minute winner you can't help but go mental.
Moments like this make it all worthwhile:
Gives me goosebumps just watching it and I have no affiliation to Carlisle United... imagine being in that stadium. Magic. -
Re: What makes football fans so dedicated/bothered?You can try...(Original post by saggy8)
I just can't explain it

Re: What makes football fans so dedicated/bothered?
Why do you have a problem with people being dedicated to sports? Without sports life would be much more boring for a lot of people.... it's more than entertainment, more than a hobby. It doesn't make you a sad person either, which is what most of you sceptics are trying to depict of sport fans.

Re: What makes football fans so dedicated/bothered?
Because football is the biggest sport in the UK

I can't wait for the nfl season in Sept, which is more a case of putting a bet on and then supporting the team (Chicago this year!). But even then it is just something to chill out with! Nothing beats a Saturday night with a few beers and a featured nfl match on ss1.
But yea, i've diverged. Football is the same for me. It is something to watch, something to celebrate. I don't rely on football for a sense of success or anything like that, it is merely my equivalent to someone watching X-factor. Plus, i'm a Newcastle supporter and seeing your team, which is widely regarded as an underdog, claw their way into 5th whilst beating some top clubs gives you a nice feeling. The atmosphere is amazing in the stadiums. The fans on matchday are cool. Cissé scoring when he wants ..... etc -

I'm a big NFL fan as well.
One of my bucket lists things is to grab some mates and a **** load of beef and go on a season long road trip taking in all 31 stadiums.
But for now I'm focussing on bringing the 2013 draft to bodeans. -

I'll probably do the same next year
Who do you fancy for the superbowl this year? -
Re: What makes football fans so dedicated/bothered?I don't have a problem, Im asking to understand it. Im dedicated to sport when it comes to myself (even though im rubbish) I still keep fit and set myself goals. Im trying to understand though how people get so driven by just being a spectator since their team winning doesnt affect their lives or make them a better person. Achieving something yourself though does.(Original post by TWF)

Hmm you can't look past the Giants until someone beats them, but for more of an NFC sleeper hows about Philadelphia? Very talented roster finally with that full offseason to put it right. Dallas look talented maybe a year away. Washington will be better with RG3.
I think the Packers have been figured out, the Saints will have a rough year, San Francisco can only go so far with limited QB play, Atlanta always flatter to deceive and Carolina aren't quite there yet.
Ultimately I think the NFC championship comes down to the Detroit Lions and the Philadelphia Eagles.
AFC you just can't see past the Patriots with the additions of Hightower, Chandler Jones, Brandon Lloyd. Pittsburgh lost a lot of experience, Baltimore lost their best 2 OLBs and Lewis and Reed, Cincinnati and Houston should be there or there abouts but my team the Denver Broncos and Kansas City are a year away.
AFC championship I'll say New England Patriots v Houston Texan
And the Patriots to win the Super Bowl over the Lions. -
Re: What makes football fans so dedicated/bothered?
I'm a football fan first, a man united fan second.
I'd much rather watch a decent game of football and united lose, than a **** game and united win...
I guess I'm a neutral, just hoping united do well, gotta admit I was a bit gutted at the weekend, though no tears were shed and I didn't get the hump on, 'cause I'm not a fanatic. -
Re: What makes football fans so dedicated/bothered?(Original post by nextplanet)
Ive never understood dedicated football supporters but that is why im making this thread to find out. I dont get how people can feel so good when the team they support wins or feel so low when they lose. If I achieve something I feel really good but if a team who I support achieves Im glad but dont feel much else because it doesnt have any affect on MY life
This is what I dont understand, how come man city fans are sooo elated when the result has no effect on their own lives? Or maybe im overestimating the feeling.. is the feeling when your fave team loses similar to heartbreak when one of your relationships ends (some fans cry for days)?
Im not judging anyone or anything people can feel what they like but im trying to understand it as ive always been curious what makes fans so dedicated when a football team doesnt affect your life in any way
I found this.. I dont know which parts are true apply to you
http://www.theocentric.com/culture/i..._football.html
So you don't care or feel any emotion towards anything that doesn't directly affect you or your life?
Don't you like music? or movies? Aren't there any songs that make you happy or sad? Movies that make you laugh or scared?
Art? Theatre? anything....?
Surely there must be something that you enjoy that isn't directly linked to your own personal achievements or success?
So what you see at a football stadium is basically the inner animal instinct in men...the instinct to herd and be part of a group.
