Just to give my opinion to people who are freaking out. Just relax, the exam has passed. Don't look at the solutions and then stress yourself out.

Was it you who gave me the neg? Whoever it was, it took away -0.
I don't know who you're talking to - everyone thinks it was a really easy paper, and is confident they scored pretty highly.

Even those that are less sure - everyone reading this thread except you is here because they want(ed) to see Arsey's unofficial mark scheme.

I'm not sure you read my post correctly.
I was just voicing my opinion and giving advice to people who, like me, still have more exams to sit. Don't stress yourself.

You seem to think that I am complaining about the thread, I am not.
You also seem to think that I am here on gun-point. I assure you, I am here by my own doing. But just because I'm here, doesn't mean I have/want to read the solutions.

I have 4 more exams, I don't see your point?

It's a solutions thread, you're wasting your time if you don't want them.

Read my first post. Again, I was giving advice and voicing an opinion. Frankly, if you consider my post so irrelevant, why don't you just ignore it?

Okay, here's a question that I'm pretty sure no-one will be able to answer for me. :P

In the SUVAT question about the ball projected upwards, I accidentally wrote down 3.00 instead of 2.99. Now, I know that answering to 2sf is fine, so will I actually still end up getting the mark, or did that last 0 lose it? I'm quite sure I wrote down 3sf too, but only next to the other answer that was required, 2.30.

I did a similar thing to you (wrote 3.00 and put 3sf in brackets).

    M1 May 2012

Overall I would say this was a fairly easy paper.

Q1 – Momentum and Impulse – Pretty easy.
    Q2 – Moments – Very easy.
Q3 – Equilibrium on an inclined plane – standard, nothing tricky at all about this question.
Q4 – Speed time graph – standard, fairly easy.
Q5 – Linear kinematics / Dynamics – a) standard, it is on every other paper! b) A bit weird, I thought it odd how far it travels.
    Q6 – Vectors – a-c) very easy d) was more challenging
Q7 – Connected particles – A very similar question was on a past paper, thrust finally returned in part e) bloodbath! But only 3 marks.

I think the average mark will be quite high on this paper and I would expect higher than normal boundaries
    I am going to guess

    75 = 100ums
    69.5 – 90ums
    64 – 80ums
    57 – 70ums
    50 – 60ums
    43 – 50ums
    37 – 40ums

    A couple of points....

It is fine to leave answers in terms of g, or in fractional form. However, when an approximation for g is used answers should be given to 2sf but 3sf is fine, anything more than 3sf will be probably be punished.

Thrust is a PUSHING force, it can only occur in rigid bodies and acts in the opposite direction to tension which is a PULLING force. Thrust has only ever appeared once before, June 2009. It was an absolute bloodbath and was partly due to the very low boundaries.

This thread will be locked at somepoint and then unlocked at midnight following the Mechanics 1 examination. I will upload the paper and my solutions to this post.

I will do my best to answer questions about the paper but please try to read the thread first so that I am not answering the same questions lots of times. Here are some links to previous M1 threads, they are worth a read and you will see what the common errors were...

    Jan 2012 - http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/show....php?t=1900075

    June 2011 - http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/show....php?t=1619086

The second one has loads of past papers, mark schemes, model solutions etc

    Good luck tomorrow.
For the speed-time graph, i did it the same as yours but i only indicated the two times given i.e. 25 seconds and 60 seconds, will i get the marks for it, as it was part a) and we didnt have the other times at that part of the question.
Also for impulse question and thrust, i worked it out for both particles and wrote check next to the 2nd particle i worked it out for is that fine
Also i forgot to write e) next to one of my answers, will i be penalised?

    Thanks for solutions!
Really dissapointed that exam was too easy, i expected a harder one, so it would be easier to get 100 ums.
Failed two marks for taking distance from ground instead of A,i am so angry at myself because i wasn't bothered to read the question properly

I don't recall the question or answer, but if you wrote 3.00 and the answer to 3sf was 2.99, then your answer is wrong so you will lose the last A1, yes.

In hindsight, that does seem pretty probable.

What an incredibly silly way to lose a mark.

thanks for the solutions man, could any one tell me if i would lose marks for question 5, part a. i used two SUVAT formula's to work out the speed was 21. i used to the 1st one to work out the max distance above point A. and the 2nd to work out the speed. would they deduct marks because i used two, not one SUVAT formula?

Every question involving g that you've left to a higher degree of accuracy could potentially cost you an accuracy mark.
