i am not motivated because i dont know what i want to do. this is why i asked for advice. i have had motivation in the past. i motivate myself to go to the gym several days a week for a start! i need some direction in my life.

you would only make that sort of money if you were prepared to have sex with other men. not something i would want! women can get sex for free or even people pay them for it so male prositution will earn you little if anything.

i believe i could have passion for it. i had a passion for a few years when i was younger of planes and i went to a few aircraft museums. i believe that passion is still there somewhere. that is why i am grateful for the advice i got about joining the UAS.

thank you for the suggestion but medicine is out of the question. i could never handle the blood and gore of it all. it is not something i would ever want to do.

University Air Squadron. They are attatched to the RAF, but there is no commitment to join as far as I'm aware (I'm in the Navy equivalent and they actively don't want us to join because the point is to teach civilians about the armed forces). It's good fun, and they will give you some flying training and air time, plus there will probably be opportunities to look into commercial flying. It would also look great if you were trying to find sponsorship, and looks good on any job application. They also pay you to go. It sounds too good to be true, but I haven't found any catches yet

Of course you can, but if you don't know exactly what you want to do, why not try out a few different fields after you graduate like business, or something related to your degree? Theres nothing to say you have to stick to them, and let be honest, you're always going to find holes in every job (otherwise everyone would be doing them) so try not to pick too many flaws in everything and just look at things with an open mind, maybe go to a careers advisor and maybe instead of saying no to each job they suggest because of this that or the other, order them in the order youd like to do the, give them a rating out of 10 and then look for jobs that youve rated highest

Anything. Go to your uni's job/careers fairs. Sign up for Milkround/Wikijob/etc. emails. There's bound to be a few things that at least have the potential to be interesting to you.

i was always into wildlife/nature/geography when i was young, up until the age of about 16. i read nature books, science books, books on plants and animals, books on countries and continents. i didnt take geography beyond year 9 at school (i hated the way it was taught and didnt like any of the teachers). i didnt take biology beyond GCSE because it was very much focused on the human body and i hated the blood and gore associated with that (i could never become a doctor).


i have no idea anymore. i dont have any real interests anymore. i have considered in my head many options for careers.

eg. business: i am not driven and determined enough for this

banking, accountancy, consultancy and any other finance job: i cant imagine working in a boring stressful job like this with long hours and trying to blag my way to getting a job. i have no interest in this.

chef: when i was younger i was interested in food. but now i see preparing and eating food as a chore.

bodybuilding/fitness model: i have been lifting weights in the gym for about 18 months. i have considered this. bodybuilding you have to take so many drugs (risk your later life) to make any progress. fitness model- i dont really want to look like any of the models in the magazines or advertisements. i prefer a bulkier look.

airline pilot: i have strongly considered this but apparently the costs are huge. i have heard it costs about 100k for all the training and you dont get sponsors or the companies paying for this.

psychologist/psychiatrist/working with mental health: i have considered this before. i have a small history of mental illness and it runs in my family too. but i dont think i have the patience to work with mentally ill people.


i may have considered other careers too. i cant quite remember. sorry for the long post. i am grateful for any advice i receive.

im doing a languages degree so everyone was like be a teacher! be an interpreter! but i knew they were the 2 things i really really didn't want to do
when i went on my year abroad i asked my dad to find me a job i could do whilst i was away. it is in aviation. and now i know this is what i want to do.

i suggest find some work experience in different places and use that to make up your mind because some jobs may surprise you or turn out different to how you expect...
i never expected to want to work with planes (i was never interested as a kid), and cargo had never even crossed my mind, yet here i am, and i love it!


(edit: also i read after posting, there is ways of getting funding for being a pilot, and also being a pilot isn't the only job to do with planes that exists...)

how about trying it first before thinking about its practicalities? if you enjoy doing it then you won't let anything stop you from continuing it---that's passion..

there is never a surefire way to get into the things you want... you're bound to struggle...you can't dare to dream if you don't dare to fail.. they come hand in hand..
it sounds like you really want to be a pilot but money is hindering you from becoming one, and you're afraid of getting hooked and then end up not achieving it.. I say take the risk. Just do it and stop over analyzing things, do something foolish for once..

you're smart you'll figure out a way of getting some money for it

btw before I read your posts about agreeing with being a pilot, I was gonna tell you to try something completely different from what you're considering..I was thinking of something like journalism, blogging, films, directing, documentaries, music or charity work...

im doing law at manchester... 2nd year.... 3 weeks ago i realised i wanted to become a petroleum engineer and work on oil rigs, but atleast i know what i want to do know

keep looking, and oh yeah if you get into a msc at canada or us u can start earning $110,000 + a year as a chem engi which is probably a starting wage of £70,000 which is what most consultant medics get

and i ve been tracking top level opening, which have regularly been appearing and the wage there is $200,000-$300,000 so cant wait to do it, although id probably be like 27 when i start ...

why don't you start some sort of business? be your own boss, decide your own hours, build an empire then sit back and let the money roll in. all you need is an angle.

lol, yeah its that easy. You have clearly never run your own business, to make it a success, you would not be deciding your hours to begin with, it would take a hell of a lot of hard graft, most likely working 7 days a week.

My advice is to chill out and go with the flow and concentrate on your interests and hobbies too.

I am sure most people here will say this is bull**** but to me, this formulaic method of deciding your career at sixteen and planning a levels, degrees and graduate schemes accordingly is just stupid for most people. In practice, most people drift into things and often only settle into a particular type of job in their thirties. Often they will male a complete change or direction in their forties or fifties too. For example, look at politicians - many now come through the ranks of advisory commitees and so on but a lot were doctors and lawyers or business people who became increasingly politically active over the years. That is an extreme example but the point remains.

Another point is that jobs and career isn't everything and for many of us it is only going to be a second or third priority in life behind family, relationships and hobbies/interests. In this case the job or career is simply a means to an end and they just essentially fall into anything to earn money so they cab concentrate on their true interests. Therefore, if you don't have any burning career ambitions this isn't a problem. As long as you find something to keep you going, ya know - find your passion in life, fall in love have some good nights/days out, make plans to travel etc.
