    WJEC Chemistry CH1 15th May 2012
There's no thread for the exam so I thought I'd make one, how did it go guys? So far I know I got the last question wrong cus the element was Li not Na, forgot to take away the OH molecular mass :/

I know I did awful in that exam I competely guessed all the answers for the last page! I found it a really weird exam. What was the answer to the question asking about the acid in excess? And the one about hydrogen powered cars? I hated that exam :'(

for the hydrogen car, I put that "since h20 is produced, it's likely to react with Co2 to produce H2CO3 (acid rain), and h20 requires electrical current to be made, so high energy cost, and this energy is obtained from crude oil!

and then for the statement about what you thought "hydrogen can only be used as fuel if it's 100% safe" i just put "yes, i agree, because the development of science has to ensure that everyone in society is free from harm"

Acid rain is caused by sulphur dioxide though, not co2?
And I put I don't agree due to the fact that there is always a chance of explosion even in petrol powered vehicles

Does anyone else feel that the CH1 papers are just that little bit too long?
I don't think I'm ridiculously slow (although I probably write too much for some answers) but I'm not sure I've ever finished a past paper in 1.5 hours - if I have, its been by the skin of my teeth. There just doesn't seem to be any room to breathe.

Didn't quite finish this one - that's 8 marks down the pan before the marker's even got the red pen out

So frustrating as I know the work, and I'm sure I could do well.

It said what do "you" think of this statement. so I think there could be yes and no answers- provided your justification is sound.

you're right about Sulfur dioxide and acid rain, but co2 does produces an acid solution too- check the WJEC CH1 revision guide online, Co2+ h2o---> H2CO3 (carbonic acid)

Im actually a 2nd year, and this was my 2nd attempt of CH1. I cried inside after thsi exam, after all the work ive put toward learnign all the definitions, and 1 came up.. No hess or le chateliers principle ?! AND THEY ALWAYS BLOODY COME UP! The last uqestion, i didnt get any of the calculations, as id just didnt make sense what so ever so thats like -8 marks ! The questions about Hydrogen, diesel and petrol cars what the hell ?! Left The QWC (3) mark question blank, and didnt even have time to go back to do it! Also, the questions With 2 curves and you had to draw curve C, and question asked - how can you tell from table 1 that HCl is in excess? Left it blank i had no idea, just kept staring at the table. Also got 1 of thw questions wrong in part A, where they gace you elements: A,B,C,D,E ant you ha dto sort them out from Highest to lowest IE. I said : A,B,C,D,E which is kinda rediculous, and wrong at the same time.
    Complete disaster.
Looks like im doing a 3rd year :l

Well, I fell at the first hurdle and only sketched a Px orbital - I think you were meant to sketch all three...

Still, one piece of advice they always give, which does sometimes help, is RT(F)Q - for one question (the second part of part c or d of a question) it asked for the volume of hydrogen produced by 0.612g of magnesium, but in the first part of the question the 0.02 moles of acid could only react with about 0.243g, so I put both.

I dont want to see my tachers. My biology already told me that hes dissapointed with me, and it made me cry the other day so yeah... I have a uni offer of ABB, and i NEED a B in chem. but if i find Ch1 so freaking difficult, and have Ch4 and Ch5 in 3 weeks then i might better go and ask for a job in McDee's :/

I think I did okay for this paper. the moles equation at the end was not too bad, I forgot to minus the OH aswell and ended up with Na. I didnt like the Hess' cycle or the lack of defenitions! and the oil ones where very strange..
