in on Arsey thread. But what would people predict the grade boundaries to be? I found this paper incredibly tough. Couldnt answer about a third of the paper. Feelsbadman.jpeg

Haiyya, my calculations for the last bit are rift except I got lambda equals -7, so my final answer was wrong.. Also, I got y=
+-Root(9/4)but I substituted y=9/4 instead of 3/2by mistake :'( how many lost is that in total?
same lol even worked out OP then crossed it out.

model solutions are now in the first post
Just wanted to say thank you for all your help over the last two years. It's great that you do each paper every year and you put a lot of people's concerns at rest.

One final question though...with the cartesian equation, I got to the point that you did where you said it was enough. But then I went and put everything in terms of y, to get 4x^2/12-3y=y

If they see my X^2=12(1-y/4)(y/4) in my working do you think i'll get full marks?

What does everyone think the grade boundaries will be ? Thought the paper was fairly standard so hopefully the same grade boundaries as usual ! need 86 ums for uni !!!

I don't think grade boundaries will go up that much, it's not an easier paper. Just your standard level.

made some stupid mistakes, for the -4/2root3 i just used the divide sign when i normally use the one number over another sign so got k to be -2 and the answer to be -2root3 and carried this on for the next question, will i lose one mark for the next question and is it just error carried forward for the second?

for the separating a variables question i also took 3/y over and left 1/cos^2x on the dx side, to get 3lny and tanx when i integrated and then put the y and x numbers they gave into my equation how many marks will i lose for this?

on question 5 you had to do:

    int(y) dy = int(sec^2(x)) dx

how many marks would I lose if I wrote instead:

    int(1/y) dy = int(sec^2(x)) dx

Umm I thought it was easy but quite easy to make mistakes.
I don't know, I hope it's low grade boundaries but all I need to get is 67 UMS average.

I didn't know how to simplify the question to aln2 +b, so I guess that's one mark lost there. And I completely left out the cartesian equation one after trying for about 20 minutes. Hopefully if I didn't make any other silly mistakes I should still get 71, and if I did decent in C3 maybe I can scrape an A*.. :/

I have everything right, apart from one concern.

    In the cartesian question, I had an answer of 4x2 + 3y2 -12y = 0

    Here's how I got it:

    Using the identity Cos(2t) = 2Cos2(t) -1

    y would equal 2Cos(2t) + 2

    Rearranging gives (y-2)/2 = Cos(2t)

and rearranging the x bit would give Sin(2t) = (x)/sqrt(3)

Then I plugged in those two results into the identity Sin2(2t) + Cos2(2t) = 1

    So I got (x2)/3 + (y2-4y+4)/4 = 1

I multiplied the whole equation by 12

    Removing 12 from both sides, which eventually gave me 4x2 + 3y2 -12y = 0

I think I got everything right except in the last question I got (2,1,1) instead of (-2,1,1) and thn used that for the rest of the question. Do they allow 'errors carried forward'? I need 84 ums to get an A* for my firm choice, so can't afford to lose all the marks on the last question... :/
