D2 May 2012 Edexcel - Post Exam FIRST POSTD2 May 2012
Overall I think this was a fair paper. However, it did take a very long time to complete.
So I would imagine quite a few candidates will have run out of time and dropped big marks
on the linear programming question.
Q1 Allocation
Trickyish in that it was a 5x5 matrix and it weirdly went from 3 lines to 5 lines.
It also took a long time.
Q2 Salesman
V. Easy
Q3 Transportation
The first stepping stone path was weird and it was odd that it wasn't optimal; otherwise okay.
Q4 Simplex
Pretty easy but it was fraction city
I doubt many people will get part c) correct. Stating no negatives in the profit row will not be sufficent.
Q5 Game Theory
What a great question.
Fairly standard, I very much doubt many people will have reduced to a 2x2 game, using the well graph will be fine.
Q6 Flows
Pretty standard, fairly easy
Q7 Linear Programming (Allocation)
Very, very, very easy if you learnt it. It was on the 2011 paper.
4x4 was a bit mean and involved unnecessary extra writing.
Q8 Dynamic Programming
Order book... don't say you were not warned.
As order book questions go it was easy, but I still think it will be poorly answered due to candidates rushing it.
Last few June boundaries were 64, 61, 57 for 80ums
It certainly wasn't more difficult than last year so I will guess at
100ums - 75
90ums - 70
80ums - 65
70ums - 57
60ums - 50
50ums - 43
40ums - 36
This thread will be locked at somepoint and then unlocked at midnight following the Decision 2 examination. I will upload the paper and my solutions to this post.
I will do my best to answer questions about the paper but please try to read the thread first so that I am not answering the same questions lots of times.
Good luck.Last edited by Arsey; 01-06-2012 at 00:11. -
Re: D2 May 2012 Edexcel - Post Exam FIRST POST
on the last question, in the second stage, i got the first row wrong as i forgot to add a number, but i think i got the rest right and the method. this obviously made my table wrong. how many marks would i lose??!

Re: D2 May 2012 Edexcel - Post Exam FIRST POSTwhat you get at the end ? I got 2 3 3 3(Original post by cooldudeman)

Re: D2 May 2012 Edexcel - Post Exam FIRST POSTSame :') I was like. Am I reading this right?(Original post by WaNaBe)
Evil Dr Feindish and Agent Goodie, was loving it! Had a little laugh to myself in the exam.
I wonder what situation he will be in, in furute D2 papers.

Re: D2 May 2012 Edexcel - Post Exam FIRST POST
The constraints for the minimum cost linear programming question.
I put the sum of rows and columns as <= 1 rather than just = 1, because I remembered the mark scheme for one of the papers had the probabilities as <= 1 even though they clearly were summing to 1. I thought it was a simplex thing, that it had to be in the form of an inequality.
How many marks am I likely to lose? -
Re: D2 May 2012 Edexcel - Post Exam FIRST POSTvery easy i thought, got all the same answers as arsey, probably dropped some method marks though, simply as its decision maths! how about you?(Original post by JordanS94)
so ... how'd it go guys? -
Re: D2 May 2012 Edexcel - Post Exam FIRST POST
On the game theory question if I didn't reduce the matrix down to 2x2, but still got all the correct answers and working will I lose any marks?
Also for part c) of the simplex question I put: "x, z and t = 0 and from the profit equation we can see that this is the point at which profit is maximised." , any chance of a mark?Last edited by jon__; 01-06-2012 at 06:55. -
Re: D2 May 2012 Edexcel - Post Exam FIRST POSTNo; you only had to reduce it to two options for Agent Goodie and then find his best strategy and the value. Reducing the game further would have given you less working but it wasn't required.(Original post by jon__)

I did the same, I initially put just = and then changed it. Hope I won't lose too many marks!(Original post by Jackreyes)
