You really don't get the directions in this question, do you?

The whole diagram is in a horizontal plane. The angle of 90 + alpha is the angle between the horizontal impulse and the original horizontal direction of motion.

I've just read the question again and you're right. In that case the correct answer would be 'in a direction making an angle of 90 degrees to the initial direction of motion', but how do you define whether it goes 'up' or 'down'?

I thought the paper was fairly easy... but I struggled for some reason.. mainly with the last question. I sat and stared and tried for 30 minutes, before realising what I was meant to do with about 2 minutes left. So that's 20% (raw marks) down the drain already...

Fingers crossed that those grade boundary predictions will prove accurate :/

I'm sorry to bring up an old thread, but on the second part of the moments one, if I did the working completely wrong, but got the direction as vertically upwards, would I still get 1/4?

You'll know on Tuesday when the mark schemes are published. I assume that your calculation resulted in an upwards component?

Are they being published this coming tuesday, or a tuesday in a few weeks time? And yeah, it resulted in an upwards component. But given that I understood the question correctly, it could have only been vertically upwards or vertically downwards.

This Tuesday, but probably on secure download.

Yes, just up or down, so the answer depended on the sign of your component.

The mark for the direction is an A mark, which means you have to have got the method mark for the calculation in order to get it.

As I expected, all sorts of descriptions get the mark. The official answer is "perpendicular to the original direction" but they also accept “vertically”, “North”, j direction, “up”

As a teacher, I find it a pain that the mark schemes of the most recent papers are freely available on the web. What is the point of giving mock exams?

My school either sets its own questions or uses questions from old textbooks for end of unit tests, and then for revision they let us do and mark our own papers, trusting us not to cheat ourselves. It seems to work...

As a student, I can tell you that a student's first priority isn't "I'll see if I can do all the past papers!" Certainly that was the case in my class since we'd end up with weeks to go practically all of them.
