Re: laptop or ipad for uni next year
But to be fair if you get the new ipad you could always use that voice dictation thing and just correct any mistakes it makes after the lecture, i've never been in a lecture so i dont know how good the sound quality is or if you're ipad will be able to pick it up/ remove bg noise

Re: laptop or ipad for uni next year
Good luck typing and printing a 2.5k essay on an iPad or a 12-15k dissertation.
Oh wait, iPads can't print... nevermind.
If you already have a computer then an iPad *might* be something to consider (and note I said something to consider, not something to buy). It doesn't replace a computer - not a desktop, not a laptop, not even a netbook. It's not a "computer", it's a tablet.
If you have/take a computer to uni and you just want something to listen to music on (although it's 2012, I assume everyone has had an iPod for at least the last 5 years?), go on Facebook/Twitter on then the iPad is probably the best tablet you're going to get.
Tablet... as in, not a computer. -

Depends, what ever anyone tells you the majority of people will take notes in lectures using pen and paper, it's quicker and easier, so I wouldn't worry about taking a laptop to lectures. So considering you'll take the desktop with you I'd recommend a tablet. BUT if you're not taking a computer with you without a doubt get a laptop, you will need either a laptop or desktop.
I'm thinking about getting a tablet to take to lectures with me (laptops to heavy to have in your bag 9am-4pm) just so I can read through notes, pdf's, watch videos and play some games without having mass weight in my bag. But this is more of a want than a need :P
