how many quotes do you usually include in each essay? i have only been putting about 6/7 but some people say they put about 20!? how on earth do you have time to properly analyse them? if i put more than 6 i end up running out of time. is 6 okay? or am i going to have to speed up? keep in mind I am aiming for 15/25 for each essay
My teacher taught us that you should use about 6 big quotes that you make a point around, then use small quotes like " little parties" (The Great Gatsby) all throughout your essay.
That way you end up impressing the marker cos you've used about 20 quotes and are showing a way deeper understanding of the text

I always structure my essay in four paragraphs (a point, quote, analysis HOWEVER, point, quote, analysis) so based on this I do 8 quotes roughly per essay, and my essays are usually 19/21s

But, it shouldn't matter how many quotes you have in your essay because you could put in 20 but they might not be relevant to the question and so you'd waste time for less marks!

If you go on the sqa website for english, they have a grade calculator so you could work it out from there?

The marker might like it more than your teacher did - they are completely subjective

I'm in fourth year so I recently sat Standard Grade however I'm sitting Higher next year. Am I right in thinking the SQA have drastically changed the exam/course this year? I keep hearing things about the SQA changing the exam questions and something about a 30 minute last question..
They're only making the last question easier. That's all. It was always a lengthy essay-style question, only they are asking for similarities and differences between the two passages, and you can now bulletpoint (doesn't have to be in prose form). We should be grateful for the change, it's so much easier now than it was in the past. You'll understand and learn how to answer this next year though.

yeahh well as the film Im doing is about the Holocaust, and I must say it was a heartbreaking film the emotion you feel from it is much easier to write about i think? I think films are good in a way because its different to the usual same essay of literature,

Really not looking forward to the critical essays! I am studying hotel room 12th floor, Ulysses (poetry), a hanging and shooting an elephant (essays) and ender's game (novel). Realised earlier that this means if I don't get a poetry question then I'm screwed. Just hoping I can relearn Romeo and Juliet tomorrow (and keep skyrim at bay). Wish I could have done a film (blade runner ftw!), other classes in our school did one but we didn't.
Good luck to everybody and remember, you will probably never have to write about Shakespeare again! Think happy thoughts!

These are the texts im hoping to write about in the exam:
Drama - A view from the bridge (usually a question on it)
Media (film) - Witness (usually a question on this aswell!)

And if i don't have suitable questions I'd probably do either 'At Grass' or 'Church Going'
I'm getting really worried now I hate English so much!

    Hey guys,

Don't worry about what your teacher has said about your folio - it's very subjective. Last year my teacher said that I would get two 17s for each of my pieces (34/50 overall), and when she checked with another teacher at school (who works with the SQA) he said that I'd get one 15 and a 17 (32/50 overall). I actually ended up getting 46/50... So I either got two 23s or one 25 and a 21. :fluffy: Therefore, your teacher can be wrong.

Also, more quotations = more impressive, true. But, just remember not to go too overboard with quotations. Your quotations are backing you up; they're not you're main point. So just make sure to not overshadow your analysis and points with your evidence/quotes. You guys have loads of quotes, but also remember that TECHNIQUES are equally important or at times even more-so! Techniques = da bomb. PLEASE DO NOT FORGET THAT!

Aahh same that feeling when you sit and stare at the critical essay paper 5 minutes before the exam begins and thinking what questions will come. Guys dont worry SQA (thats me, ma username duhh, lol joking) will know each schools literature so we can answer the questions! Im doing two texts and I feel confident, I can/will answer the questions! 1h,30min of nightmare and THATS IT No more literature!! Hehe excited !
