Was English anyone's first exam? Because I usually mess the first one up.
It was my first one. I'm doing three Highers in night classes: English, Maths and Physics. I've never done any Highers before, but I'm pleased to say that the worst of it is now over for me. I find English to be somewhat boring, albeit not too difficult. I'm more of a maths/science guy, so I'm very much more confident with those.

Where do you think you messed up?

Well I hope you get those 5 A's. You deserve them on kindness alone. You have made me feel a lot better about my situation so thanks for that. I guess I should be ok in the end. I told my brother about my situation and he thought he had failed his higher English exam and he ended up getting a B. He said that him getting a B was an absolute mirical since he had failed his previous prelim.

And I do Chemistry too! Don't tell me you also do physics. I thought the chemistry paper was pretty hard to be honest. I found that there was some challenging questions in the multiple choice section. I think I have done well overall though. I am sure you will have done so too. Even if you did mess up a question or two. After all, it is not as if you just left a whole question blank for the examiners to laugh at.
You'll be fine, just focus on your next exam Is your next exam Maths by any chance?

I reckon I've lost around 11 marks overall in the chemistry paper through stupid, idiotic mistakes, and these are my known losses, I've probably lost a few more that I don't know of I say I'm gunning for 5 A's, I'd be very happy with 4 A's and B though, the B being English. My folio is apparently sitting at 21/23 (which in itself is a minor miracle) according to my English teacher, so if i get 2 19's in my critical essays, and 35/50 for the close reading, then I should be okay.

What texts did you do for your essays by the way?

Ahh I see! Messed up on the essays, which is usually my strongest point :/ Best of luck with the sciences though!

So have people done really bad in the past because I heard that for the last 3 years the boundaries have been lower.

Did anyone do War Photographer for Q13?
Are the markers told to be tougher when marking the essays...I really want a B!

I believe grade cutoffs are based on a combination of predetermined estimates and a norm curve for the spread of marks by everyone who sat the exam. So yes and no. If a paper is harder, then you may have done just as well in relation to everyone else. A particularly hard year might have 60% for an A. And an easier year 80%. You've necessarily done badly because you found a paper harder because that's taken into account when getting grade boundaries.

This is my vague understanding of it anyway, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I hope I've not misinterpreted your question either.

What would you think about the chances of me getting an A if I told you that I completely accidentally missed out the very last 5 mark close reading question because I was too stupid to turn over the page?

You absolutely still have a chance of getting an A

I missed out the last question too and worked out that it worth 4% of the entire grade (0.8 per mark for close reading x 5) , i missed out a few actually, but am pretty confident about the answers i did put down and confident about folio and essays, so as long as you have a balance you should get an A

What you're saying is right... but i don't think it will everbe 80% for an A(thank god)

Even though people seem to have quite liked the exam today(or at least found it tolarable), people as a whole struggle with english and i personally think it will always skate around the 60-70% for a A

If the grade was to be 80% for an A that would be terrible, cause logically the B/C grades would be higher?

Does anyone know why we were allowed to post straight after the exam? I thought TSR would delete any threads within the first 12-24 hours of the exam?

Everyone sits this exam at the same time, so we cant reveal any answers they will remove threads for those exams that are sat across the world at different times because answers may be revealed

I wrote on War Photographer but I done question 12, about a complex character. I was really worried about that question though as I don't know if I justified my point well enough :/

Yep, it was my first one too. Felt pretty okay coming out the exam but getting worried after reading how everyone's done. At least it's over with though!

For everyone panicking about the pass mark being 80% for an A (don't know where they got that number from) the last five years respectively the A pass mark has been 63%, 65%, 64%, 64% and 64%. If it somehow went up to 80% this year then we deserve to start a riot...

I've got a gut feeling that I haven't done as well as expected in English
My answers to Section One weren't that great, and although I did answer every question in the paper, my expression was awful! Also, all complicated language I knew went out the window
My essays were.. alright maybe? I managed to somehow make the spectacularly stupid choice of deciding to write about a poem that we barely covered in class, and I had completely self-analysed and never written an essay about before simply because it had a great question (I think?!), my other essay was awful and I had to twist the question loads to get it to fit.. I'm just hoping my technical accuracy and spelling was acceptable!

Indeed, my next exam is maths. I am studying for it right now. I am scared that some really weird question is going to come up in the paper. They always seem to throw in something odd in each year.

My dream of getting 5 A's is probably not going to come a reality. I will probably get 4 A's and a B in English. Maths is also not one of my strongest subjects. I used to be good at it but I just started to go downhill all of a sudden. I will probably be fine since we have got 3 days to revise for it though.

For my essays I done a poem called "To his Coy Mistress" by Andrew Marvell and a non fiction text called "A Hanging" by George Orwell. I doubt you will have done them. They are pretty strange pieces. Unique. I don't know anyone else other than the people in my class who have done them. They were not my first choices btw but I still think I managed to write good essays with them. Who knows, maybe the rarity of essays on them will push up my mark. Now that is wishful thinking.

    What did you do?
